Rebuilding a R151 with lots of pics.
« on: Apr 07, 2017, 11:44:29 PM »
Pulling a R151 apart. I put picks here for me in the future and everyone. Enjoy! Oddly so far the R15X seem easier to deal with then W56X. The previous W56X rebuilds I had to create several special tools. That hasn't been the case so far with this.

I'm getting ready to tear into the r-series I have for my truck.
I'm mainly looking to inspect and clean it out as best as possible, due to the shifter assembly and the fill plug not being on the trans for who know how long.
Is there anything I can fill it with that will clean it out, but not harm the bearings and seals?

If its not gonna be that easy..
Will I need any special tools for this project? (Press, bearing pullers, etc.)  :help: :hammer:

Not trying to hi-jack your thread, so if you could message me or something about this, or just reply on here.

I have heard of people putting kerosene in motors and transmissions running them a bit and changing the oil. I wouldn't recommend that. If you pull the two halves apart it would allow you to clean and metal or sludge out. There is also a magnet in the center which collects fillings you could clean. Might could also spray everything with brake cleaner and blow it off with compressed air. Make sure you put something on it to keep it from flash rusting!

So far the r-series has been easier then the w-series. I remember having to make several special tools for that. So far all you would need for a rebuild is a press, bearing splitter and puller, feeler gauges, snap ring pliers and torque wrench.

I am about 60% done on the rebuild. Other then the cleaning it has been enjoyable. Lots of little bits! But not bad.
If you see it, its for sale.

But you might consider just putting in about 50% Dextron ATF to existing gear oil, and run it for several hundred miles.  ATF is a high detergent formulation and has excellent lubricating properties.

My truck is an automatic at the moment, so I cant really run it.
My main concern is dirt, pine needles, and rocks.. not the sludge or old gear oil.

I attempted taking it apart lastnight, got the bellhousing, front pump and snap rings off. I took the 3 torx bit bolts out of the side of the trans, but the torx bolt on top is stripped out.. so I'm thinking I'm not gonna be able to complete this without getting too invasive.

Now that I look at this picture more, it looks like all I have to do is separate the rest of the housing.. and slide it over the input shaft.
Is it that easy and I'm overthinking it?

Geezzz..  I've never of heard of transmission getting "dirt, pine needles, and rocks" in it.  :yikes:

Yeah... a complete disassembly and rebuild would probably be your best bet.

It's that easy. You don't need to remove any torx. Just the front snap rings. Tap them apart with a soft hammer.

The torx retain spring and detente for the shifter.
If you see it, its for sale.

I haven't either, but with the shifter and fill plug off for who knows how long I'm not taking any chances.
Not gonna rebuild unless I absolutely have too, just gonna disassemble, inspect, and clean the :pokinit: out of it.

I've read of lots of people having good success with that ATF mix. Guys on the Tercel forum do that.
