Pull the selector hub off, one at a time, duct tape some plastic on, just to avoid debris, and go for a drive.
Good idea, I'll try this. Much appreciated :)

Finished up my shift boots, I made one awhile ago and it was awful, so I redeemed myself.
Hand sewed, attached through the rubber boots base.

Does the lock hub dial shift the transfer case?

Ha I wish. It turns, but doesn't do anything.

Ah, so the inevitable happened, my Motorcycle was stolen out of my driveway.
Looks like I'll be doing theft protection on my truck this weekend. I'll probably do the usual interrupter switch for the coil, they make keyed switches that I've seen at some autoparts stores.
That and hide it somewhere.
My main fear is that my truck is next.

Good news, I live in Salt Lake City, so I'm buying a Glock. Gotta protect my household somehow.

Sorry to hear about your motorcycle being stolen, but I'm glad you're thinking about theft protection for your truck. I can start any 81-89 Hilux or 4runner of this generation with a screwdriver and ballpoint pen, so I assume that a thief can, too.

If you wanted to get all fancy, you could set it up so that when the keyed switch activates the anti-theft system, turning the ignition switch to "start" blows the horn instead of cranking the engine. Furthermore: I can bypass any keyed switch with a knife and an alligator clip if the leads are in any way accessible. You've probably already thought of that.

Going to be testing the reliability of my truck this next week, I'm embarking on a 800 mile journey (1600 round trip) to San Diego to see my mom.

I'm excited, but also a bit nervous. I have no reason to doubt my trucks reliability.
Over the last month, I've driven to Moab and back, and to Nevada and back. Both are about 1200 miles combined. And, with no trouble.

My truck does leak a bit of oil from the rear main, and burns a bit too. A compression test revealed 150 on all cylinders which is pretty good.

Any recommendations for things I should check or bring? I am gonna bring my tool set, enough tools to do a head gasket if needed.

I also have a spare belt and enough oil and coolant to kill an elephant.

And most importantly, I have some kicking tunes.

Ha thanks! That's the hope, I have had literally no issues with this truck, but it is my daily so I'm of course a little worried. My biggest concern is it being stolen, However I've taken care of that, it has a hidden keyed ignition switch.

Bring a spare ignitor if you have one and a fuel filter wouldn't hurt.  Those two parts can strand you and the ignitor can be tough to get.

Do the carb trucks have a fuel filter? I've searched in vain for one on mine...

One other thing I carry with me always is an alternator. I was once on a paleontology expedition where one pickup's alternator went out in the field miles from help; If we hadn't had other vehicles and had been further in the boonies, that could have been bad.

Beyond that, definitely an ignitor; A bad ignitor has stranded me before. Maybe also a fuel pump unless yours is a reasonably good shape OEM one.

Good luck and safe travels!

Thanks! The fuel filter is next to the gas tank, under the truck bed. Just follow the fuel filter neck and you'll find it!

Picked up some stuff today!

Got a spare fuel filter (thanks for the recommendation)

Also upper and lower rad hoses, and a belt for the water pump and alternator.

And finally, another steering stabilizer as the one I put it 6 months ago is bad. Got it warrantied so that's good!

I also, got an oil pressure gauge, and found out that it is impossible to find the right threads for this thing, NO one has an adapter, not ace, not home Depot, no autoparts stores. Tomorrow I'm going to an actual hose supply, so hopefully they will have something, if not I found one online.

Tomorrow I'm picking up a set of 16 inch Tacoma wheels with some street-ish tires on them for my trip, that way I don't put high miles on my off road set.

I'll post pictures tomorrow.

One other thing I thought of (that you may have thought of): Check drain plugs on engine, transmission, and differentials. I say this because my dad used to own a Ford Courier, but the transmission plug fell out on a highway trip, and he didn't know about it until the transmission was toast. (Then he bought a Toyota).

This failure mode is probably rare, but ever since hearing that story I try to check my drain plugs occasionally. They have never shown any hint of coming loose, but it's a quick and simple check that might someday save a bunch of money and hassle.

OK, my $0.02 are fast becoming $2. Hope it's useful, though.

Definitely is a useful comment, this is super simple and often overlooked, I'll definitely be doing this.

An alternator might get left out, changing one of them not on the side of the road is a pregnant dog, like draining and removing the radiator kind of pregnant dog.

My battery holds a great charge (Optima sealed battery) and I have a new alternator, so charge problems are (should) be out the window.

I'm legit bringing an entire set, of tires with me. If anything, I feel like a tire failure is what would happen.

My main, and Biggest concern is theft, especially so close to the border. My truck does have a hidden (well hidden, I might add) kill switch. Which is also keyed too, so even if it's found they can't really start it. The coil isn't even powered from the main ignition circuit, so tearing the steering column apart would do nothing.

I do however have a pretty expensive sound system in my truck, subwoofer, fosgate speakers... I really don't want that stolen.

Went on the local classifieds and found a set of base model Tacoma wheels with some highway tires on them, I didn't really see the need in using my nicer AT's on my other wheels.

I actually think they look pretty nice, they are a 16 inch rim, I might keep them. Or sell them....

I had to run an inch wheel spacer up front though.

Are you referring to the Toyota stock steering, or your truck's specific steering?  :dunno:

When you say "dangerous", do you mean dangerous because it's defective, or dangerous for some other reason?  :dunno:

It's the stock push-pull setup, with a dropped drag link. If I step on the brakes it pulls to the right.

It's the stock push-pull setup, with a dropped drag link. If I step on the brakes it pulls to the right.

Interesting....

The only stock Toyota steering failure I had on both my 1986 IFS and 1985 straight axle, was a bent tire tie rod
from going airborne about 10 feet in Mexico on the beach at about 55 MPH.  :smack:

The other failure was on my 85 on Pritchett Canyon, I backed up gently with the wheels cranked too far over on
a slight incline and busted the knuckle arm. It was totally my stupidity!  I had a spare and had it fixed in about
20 minutes. :disturbed:

I did not have a drop drag link on either trucks.  :shake:

I 4-wheeled many years on some of the most difficult rock crawling trails in AZ, CA, NM, and UT, with Toyota factory front steering system.  :driving:

I have never had any of my trucks pull the steering due to the factory stock steering.  Other than the Detroit Locker in the front diff and hubs locked that was the normal behavior, I never once felt any danger or problems with the Toyota factory steering.  I have had a steering pull because of a brake disc issue.  :blah:

I guess I have just been lucky.  :gap:

I’ve not heard of Toyota factory early truck steering design referred to as “push-pull”.  I thought push-pull is a steering technique while driving.  I always thought Toyota’s early truck steering system design is a basic tie rod,
pitman arm, shock damper, and recirculating ball bearing.  :dunno:

So is it an aftermarket drop arm or a stock one at a steep angle like 85bucket says
Dropped Draglink from procomp, and the anti-wrap bar is completely stock.

I think the issue is that it's lifted, using an upgraded dropped Draglink but the anti-wrap bar is stock, no difference in it's length. So, when I push on the brakes it doesn't work like it should and it pulls. At least that's what I've gathered.

I'm not saying your pulling issue is NOT the steering.

My 85 was lifted about 4" from stock.  Are you sure you don't have a front brake issue?

Gnarls.
I mean it's all entirely possible. On your truck was your torque rod or anti-wrap bar stock? I'm assuming you ran a dropped Draglink too.

I can go ahead and bleed the brakes, that would probably do something

I mean it's all entirely possible. On your truck was your torque rod or anti-wrap bar stock? I'm assuming you ran a dropped Draglink too.

My 85 was stock steering, no drop drag link.
