OK, I am about to swap out this chunk in my 94 4Runner. Anything I should know? Any advice on the best way to get it out and back in again? Will be doing it in my garage with jackstands and a floorjack. I have a service manual so I feel good about knowing what I need to know. My biggest concern is my heavy lifting days are kind of behind me. All suggestions will be appreciated :usa:

SqWADoosh [04:19 PM]: *sigh* I guess Chris is right and I just need to wait until I'm in a place where I have a tow rig and trailer before I get this caliber of truck
Mudder [08:28 PM]:   not try to be a jerk, but are you serious bestgen?
Prismo [06:11 PM]:   Done, time to relax or as Bestgen says....FREEDOM!
HogCanyonHopper [06:54 PM]:   I like my little rod. it gets the job done
H8PVMNT [03:30 PM]: I can go both ways.

If your talking about the 3rd member(differential), then it's a matter of disconnecting the wheel cylinders, pull the axles out a couple of inches, having already loosened all the bolts on the face of the diff and remove the driveshaft flange and tie the shaft up out of the way. A few thumps with a deadblow hammer and out she comes. Clean your surfaces, grey RTV, reverse your actions and bleed your brakes. The "chunk" is not easy to move any way but maually, good luck.

Leave some nuts on (at the end of the stud) so when the diff breaks loose, it doesn't fall off....

Yea that's the third member. I am an old Chrysler guy and that is what we called the 8 3/4 inch gear. The "chunk". I heard the parking brake cable needs to be removed from the backing plate. I have also been told it is long enough to clear without removal. any thoughts on that?

Just pull the cotter pins at the levers on the backing plates. I forgot those.  :D

Well I got it done. Made a big difference in the way my 4runner drives and responds on the road. I have not had a chance to take it off road or to the beach yet. Looking forward to that. The 4.10 LSD gear made a HUGE change from the 3.90 open carrier. With the 31.5 inch tires I think I am about 3.70 actual ratio. I got the LSD unit from a Canadian outfit called IWE rear ends only. They said it was a NOS unit with no miles. 355.00 bucks free shipping and no tax. Seems to work well and the gear is smooth and quiet. It does "grown" a bit when I back up and turn sharp in reverse . Is this normal? I used gear dope that has the additive for LSD units. Is there a breakin period for these units? Any and all comments are welcome :usa:
