Switching A/C components
« on: Feb 26, 2017, 06:24:33 PM »
Alright gents, so first of all this is my collection so far. The white one is an '84, and the blue on is an '88. Obviously the white one is carbureted. The '84 is a factory A/C truck, the blue one however, is not. Is it possible to switch the A/C components from the '84 to the '88? Yes I know it's a decent amount of work and that doesn't bother me, just need to know if it's possible. Thanks for any info!

Can't post a pic of my blue one, but it's the one in my profile pic. Yes all three are mine, the 84 has 180k original, the 85 Runner has 172k, and the blue 88 has 150k miles.

Anything is possible. I doubt you'll find any specific write-ups on it. Do it and post back the progress & information.

EDIT: I'd assume the under dash work would be the trickiest part. Everything before the firewall should be apparent/doable without too much effort.

Yeah I kind of figured that much. Alright well looks like I'm just going to dive in head first.

Do you have the Toyota FSM?

There will be some specific EFI engine parts the carb version doesn't have (at a minimum there's a idle up VSV and some plumbing)

I have the chilton manual. Yeah I'm aware of the idle up valve and all plumbing mostly just hoping the AC switch works.

When I ditched all the emmisons stuff with an EFI swap I was stupid and took of the A/C VSV but with the engnbldr cam I run my idle at 1,500 and it works well with A/C without the VSV.

I have a carbureted 85 Xtra-Cab and it left Japan without AC but, I insisted on having AC because So Cal is too friggin hot in the summer so I fit air conditioning components from an 85 an 87 and 89 to make the cold come out of the dash which it does very nicely now but, I have to remove the thermostat and run a pair of electric fans along with the stock belt driven fan to keep her from overheating during that nasty summer heat.
