You'll notice that I have updated the Subject of this post to be "The INCOMPLETE turtle migration to Moab - 2017" as I think it's more accurate at this point.  I want to say thank you to SqWADoosh for getting this trip on the calendar and doing his absolute best to heard the turtles on another epic adventure to Moab.  Andrew, thank you!  This trip will be incomplete without you, but I know you'll whip the BBT into shape and end up with your dream rig for the future.

Here's an updated version of the plan as I know it:

May 6th:
(1) Arrive in Moab and check in at the KOA
(2) Trail 0 - Moab Rim (a quick afternoon sprint to the top) - Bonus Event Option 1
(3) Hike to Delicate Arch in the evening - Bonus Event Option 2

FRONT 9
May 7th:    Trail 1 - Hells Revenge + Potato Salad Hill (?)
May 8th:    Trail 2 - Rusty Nail + Golden Spike + Gold Bar Rim
May 9th:    Trail 3 - Metal Masher

BACK 9
May 10th:   Trail 4 - Elephant Hill (be prepared to pack out your poo)
May 11th:   Trail 5 - Kane Creek Canyon
May 12th:   Trail 6 - Behind the Rocks (?)
May 13th:   Depart Moab

Here is the roster so far:

:)bestgen4runner - Chris
non forum member - Travis
crankycrawler - Rob
blackdiamond - Jon (shotgun with Rob)
mudmaster - Mark (maybe)
liveoak - Chris (maybe)

Chris/Mark -I'm really happy with the FRONT 9 lineup.  Are you interested in visiting Potato Salad Hill again?  I'm thinking that we can plan to combo the Pickle trail in on any of the three days (if we skip Potato Salad Hill).  If by Day 3 it hasn't happened we can make a point of leaving a bit earlier.

I'm guessing that the BACK 9 lineup is likely to change as Chis wasn't sold on doing Behind the Rocks again.  I would suggest doing Poison Spider Mesa instead and going to see the overlook on Where Eagles Dare.  You'd get a great view of Moab Rim and Corona Arch on that trip.  Route finding is really easy and you've done part of it already on the last trip so it would be a pretty easy trip.  Looking at my Charles Wells book I think Kane Creek would be a good trip to expand what you see in Moab and I have a difficult time recommending against Elephant Hill, BUT I have a coworker (same floor) that is going to Moab just ahead of us and got word today that the toilets are non-functional on the  backside of Elephant Hill so you are required to pack it out Rubicon style.  Go prepared.
1989 4Runner: Dual Ultimate (Inchworm front & Marlin 4.70 rear), Marlin Twin Stick, 1200-lb clutch, 4.88 R&P, Aussie Front, Detroit rear, 30-spline Longs, Long hub gears, ARP hub and knuckle studs & 35x12.50 Cooper STT PRO tires.  Marlin rear bumper & sliders.  FROR front bumper.  SAS with Alcan springs & Rancho 9000XL shocks.  Budbuilt Bolt-on traction bar.  Custom Interior Cage by Those Guys Rod and Customs.

Moab Tested & Rubicon Approved

I "heard" the BBT is at the exhaust shop which is excellent news!

May 11th:   Trail 5 - Kane Creek Canyon
May 12th:   Trail 6 - Behind the Rocks (?)
May 13th:   Depart Moab

Clearly, the group that's still in Moab and CrankyCrawler and I skedaddle on Wednesday morning can wheel where ever they want, but I thought I'd throw out a suggested itinerary for the BACK 9:

May 10th: Trail 4 - Elephant Hill (if you're going to be prepared to pack out your poo)
May 11th: Trail 5 - Poison Spider Mesa (+ 1st Loop on Where Eagles Dare to go see the overlook.)
May 12th: Trail 6 - Top of the World (This is clearly on the list for Chris so would be a very scenic low risk final day.)

CrankyCrawler enjoys Kane Creek so that's a good option as well, it's just never been one that really excited me.

The first Travel day has arrived!
Travis (Jeep TJ) was on the road bright and early at 4:30am as planned.
I am on stand by at work waiting for the green light to shoot out of hear.   :willynilly:
Travis is going to try and do the entire trip in one day if possible. (He has a backup driver, I do not)
My goal for today is 8hrs and past Boise, ID. I want to be on the road by 3pm if possible.  :shades:

UPADATE MAY 7, 2017....  :inthedark:

2017 MOAB MADNESS IN MAY!  :best:

We DO need exciting commentary, descriptions of maximum pucker-factor, pulsating minute-by-minute episodes of best photo-ops, very lightly sprinkled with the inevitable who-broke-what-and-why, AND each night’s best flashback of play-of-the-day trail highlight……

 :worthless:

or…. Just post some stuff.

I thought I'd provide the cliff note version of my trip:

Day 1: After arriving at the KOA we headed out to run the Moab Rim.  I think we started about 5:30 pm and were back down just before dark.  Rob drove until just above Z-turn and then I drove the rest of the way up and back down.  We didn't play around on Z-turn partly due to time and there was some rain that was keeping the rocks wet.

Day 2: We started the day by running Hell's Revenge.  Hell's Gate went well, we tugged Chris out of Mickey's Hot Tub with four people on the strap, and everyone had a successful run up the Escalator.  Both Chris and Travis (Jeep) made Rob and I a little nervous on Tip-Over-Challenge.  We were running at the back at that point and they didn't wait for a spotter so we just enjoyed the view.  Rob drove until Hell's Gate and then I drove the remainder of the trail with the exception of the Escalator.  After we finished Hell's Revenge we headed up to the Pickle and ran the train in about an hour.  I drove the exit which was easier than in past years in my opinion as it seems to be wider now.  If you can make the first obstacle you're golden.  On the exit we took the back way out to highway 313 which provided some "high speed" fun without really adding any length to the trip.

Day 3: We ran Rusty Nail which includes a potion of Golden Spike and all of Gold Bar Rim.  Everyone ended up taking the left Riff Raff obstacle after Rob was unsuccessful on the right side.  Rob was able to climb The Wall and pulled Chris up after a closer call than Chris would have liked.  Chris ended up pulling Travis up after we worked himself into a position were backing down wasn't possible.  Rob drove the Rusty Nail and I drove Golden Spike (i.e. Double Whammy) and Gold Bar Rim.  We gave Travis the chance to cross the Golden Crack both direction and also went to the rim overlook on Gold Bar Rim.

Day 4: We ran Metal Masher with a bit of rain that made Mirror Gulch more interesting than it would be when dry.  Rob was unsuccessful on his attempt to climb the lower rock on Rock Chucker (then it started raining) and Widow Maker is simply too big these days.  Robs truck was standing on it's tailgate.  I've never see his truck at an angle where the weight had shifted to the backside of the tires.  That in combination with the undercut at the bottom that was above the midpoint of his tires pretty much made it impossible.  I think a similar wheelbase with much larger tires and a willingness to use horsepower would be absolutely necessary.  Travis also found a climb that he was determined to climb in the rain and after several exciting near rollover events did manage to dump it on the passenger side.  He passed on at least two or three perfect opportunities to sit tight and take a strap, but...  I didn't drive any part of Metal Masher as the goal was to get Rob as comfortable as possible in case Widow Maker proved to be possible.  Impressively, his truck, with carb, started while nose up on Widow Maker.  His truck is both bobbed and the lower part removed in way of a high and tight rear bumper and he had the bumper in the dirt.  Crazy!  We backtracked and took the fast smooth route out which bypassed the last section of the trail that is primarily just a bumpy road to save some time.  After that we existed to highway 313 again and headed to Island in the Sky for some awesome views before heading back to town.

Day 5: Rob and I headed home after breakfast at the Jailhouse Café and Chris and Travis headed for Elephant Hill.

Day 6: Chris and Travis are headed home today.  I'll let him fill in the story.

Drove the entire trip home in one shot.
Over 1000 miles and 16+ hours of driving.  :screwy:
I don't recommend this. I was ready to die. To many hours behind the wheel.
After I put everything away and clean up. I will start posting all the videos and pictures

I did the straight through trip once in the 4Runner which made it a longer trip than your 16+ hour trip, but had a 2nd driver which made it easier for sure.  I was ready to be done driving at the top of the pass on that trip...
