Aussie r151 hybrid with dual R1FA
« on: Jan 03, 2017, 05:58:37 AM »
I have been searching but I cannot find the information I need.
My plan...
I am stuffing a 1KD-FTV 3ltr Hilux engine in my 88 4Runner, and while I am doing that it will be time for adding the dual case setup to the trans.
1. Does anyone know what the spline count is for the Aussie R151(production date  2006?
2. Is Aussie R151 tailhousing the same as a +95 Tacoma R150?
3. I think the Aussie R151 output shaft is 23 spline, my t-cases are 21 spline, is it possible to change the v6 to 1st case adapter so that trans side is 23 spline and the r1FA is 21? (I'll upgrade to all 23 spline later when I can afford the 4.7)
4. Hopefully I can pull off the 5th gear swap using an R452 5th gear for increased overdrive

I need to order a dual case adapter and a triple stick kit to hopefully complete my trans upgrade

Thanks for the help!

No help on this but, where are you getting your engine?

I got the engine off of gumtree Australia, found a private seller willing to ship. That was a bit sketchy in the beginning, but the guy turned out to be an incredible asset.   There are a few 1KDs in the states if you search ebay. OR you could find a wrecker willing to sell you an engine package, Australia seems cheapest for the engine, UK and Europe shipping may be cheaper shipping but all the engine package quotes I got were significantly more money.

I think helipilot and little steve are your best people to ask. Heli is currently rebuilding his 87 4Runner with a 1kd and duels and Steve is located over In the uk and seems very well versed in the topic of the 1kd motors. Go troll through helipilot's thread Diesel GOAT: The one I wish Toyota would have built

I believe he said it was a r series. I know that's not exactly what you were looking for, but it's at least some motivation.
Also the little info he does give on the trans is at the beginning and on pg 7 at the bottom and the top of pg 8

Thanks for the information. I thought Heli-Pilot had the 1KZ stuffed in the 4Runner...guess I should go check up.

Edit...
Looks like Heli-Pilot is rebuilding his 1KZ, same block as the 1KD...

Correct, he has the ealier kz, not the kd.  I've seen a couple pop up on ebay recently, which seems to have slightly dropped the price on the kz options

I'll answer my questions for future reference....

23 spine just like the R150
2. Is Aussie R151 tailhousing the same as a +95 Tacoma R150? not sure but the pre-95 R150 has a differnet housing
3. I think the Aussie R151 output shaft is 23 spline, my t-cases are 21 spline, is it possible to change the v6 to 1st case adapter so that trans side is 23 spline and the r1FA is 21? (I'll upgrade to all 23 spline later when I can afford the 4.7) See question 1
4. Hopefully I can pull off the 5th gear swap using an R452 5th gear for increased overdrive..... this seems to be working.

Installed R452 5th gear on a 2006 R151f transmission!!!!

and the rest of the mess, two R1FA transfer cases Inchworm Doubler adapter and an Inchworm R150 to R1FA adapter.
Replacing a few bearings while I'm in there. Can't wait for lo-lo behind an idling grease burner.

Any updates curious as to how you went with forward shift passing through an adaptor plate and shifter issues ?

Well I can't use the old R150 tailhousing for the R151 transmission due to the bearing I would need to use. This won't be a problem for anyone else since I'm the only person I can find trying to use an older R15x tailhousing on a newer R15x trans. Now I need to buy a newer V6 adapter to RF1A case, and sell my existing pre 95 V6 adapter.

R151 new vs R150 older version

Clean Tailhousing from the R151

5th gear fitted, waiting on the new bearing to complete install
