Broken Lock Right locker
« on: Dec 27, 2016, 02:15:47 PM »
Ive spent the past week putting high steer and new shock towers in the front only to take her out and find the rear auto locker decided the torture I had been dishing out was enough and she was one legging it in the snow and ice of my buddy's driveway up in the mountains of Los Angeles.

I'm having one 3rd member welded and putting another limited slip differential up front.
The most important of these mods is the re gear from 4:10 to 4:88 so my rig will make it up a hill on the freeway without shifting down into 3rd because of the 33" BFGs.

I had the same experience with the lockright. I broke it shortly after putting the truck on the road. I run 35's and Mine was in the rear diff.
I decided to go with a Spartan to replace it. I also used a v6 carrier 4 pinion and installed it into my 4cyl 3rd member using the conversion side bearings that Arb uses. I would not recommend the lockright (weak old design) but I would also not recommend the Spartan (extremely aggressive, Loud pops when it disengages, Sounds like a broken axle every time). I think a Detroit is the ideal option, or an air locker. I ran the welded rear diff in a previous vehicle. Bad Idea, wore the tires down so fast. Maybe if its offroad only.

If you don't mind how the Lock-Right functioned when it worked I would  suggest the Aussie Locker as a replacement.
1989 4Runner: Dual Ultimate (Inchworm front & Marlin 4.70 rear), Marlin Twin Stick, 1200-lb clutch, 4.88 R&P, Aussie Front, Detroit rear, 30-spline Longs, Long hub gears, ARP hub and knuckle studs & 35x12.50 Cooper STT PRO tires.  Marlin rear bumper & sliders.  FROR front bumper.  SAS with Alcan springs & Rancho 9000XL shocks.  Budbuilt Bolt-on traction bar.  Custom Interior Cage by Those Guys Rod and Customs.

Moab Tested & Rubicon Approved

Eventually I'll be going with air or E lockers but, for now the welded rear has to suffice.
I hated the way that POS Lock Right sounded, especially for the last month so I'll be using a limited slip locker up front like I've had all year.
When money allows, I'll buy new lockers but, I have the posi traction under control for 2017 and now that she is getting re geared, she's going to need axles and burfields and they are going to be the next major purchase.
It's funny how money dictates all, I don't like dictators.

The re gearing was working well until the transmission blew up on the freeway and forward motion ceased and waiting on AAA began.

The transmission failing made me miss out on an awesome trail ride that lasted all day for them, lucky bastards while it took 3 hours to get from Gorman up to Frazier Park & back down to the San Fernando Valley.

Update this :pokinit: Ray
The transmission and transfer cases are and we're still as good as new, so was the clutch but, the newly rebuilt rear 3rd member came apart and ate up my brand new 4:88 ring gear.

It looked to me like the rebuilder forgot to use thread locker and the two large bolts backed out which allowed the whole side to unscrew then come away from the pinion gear enough to lose forward motion.
The next time something fails, I not saying anything until it is fixed.
It felt so catastrophically bad when it failed I assumed it was the transmission but, I learned a long time ago that when you assume you make an ass of u and me but, again I'm the only ass. My being a catastrophist gets me in to more dumb stuff than I can comfortably admit to but, there it is there.

I have done many of these with no issues and never used lock tight on the bolts that came loose. Always just torqued to spec. Maybe I will start? Some body ask zuk if he does, I am curious.

I have always used lock tight on diffs I build. I have seen this same situation occur due to no lock tight being applied to the cap bolts. Mostly see failures on the ring gear bolts coming loose when no lock tight was used. On a second note, how long did it take for this to happen?

If it happened in a week he didn't even tighten down the bolts.....just my opinion.
