Bills 40oz 4Runner
« on: Dec 22, 2016, 09:39:20 PM »
Figured I would start a late build thread.   I have a 1990 Toyota 4Runner V6 3L. I will be doing some modifications to my rig slowly, but will be posting progress. I'm not gonna start from the beginning....just too much lol. So as of right now I am building a 14b 10.5 FF for my rear end to replace a 12b that it has right now. R&P and install kit just came in and now I will decide what type of locker I want for the rear. I recently moved up tire sizes and need to accommodate some room for them. Just parked it and will start trimming the rear tomorrow. Should be interesting. The rear trim is no fun on these lol.

So I got the rear trimmed to where I want and now I just need to plate and seal the rear. It actually stuffed in there better than expected. I also installed 1" taller shackles in the rear to make more space it made the difference. Now raise BUMP stops and call the rear good. The front will be comin next.

Parts are pilling up for the 14B. Just need to cut up and clean the housing and decide what locker I want to run in the rear.

Finished the rear, no fun lol. I filled the top and front section with 3/16" solid stock rod for a stronger fender. The back plating was done with 16g steel. Both side look the same. Turned out pretty good. I am going to hammer the front tomorrow and go wheeling at hollister hills. So after that I will do the firewall tubing.

Went to hollister today and man it was beautiful, little muddy, but great weather. The Toyota did awesome as usual and the rear is perfectly trimmed and BUMP stops are dialed in. Absolutely no rubbing in the rear. The front on the other hand rubbed as expected, but to my surprise not as bad bad as I imagined. Hopefully will be able to upload some videos. My buddy took his 03' rubicon (what's left of it) it's a beast also. Now to start on the front trimming. Have a good idea of how much to remove now.

So I got the 12B sold, well the kid will have the cash next week. I have decided I will be running a Detroit in the rear. Just makes sense. So I will be tearing out the 12B this wknd and start building the 14B. I will post pics with the progress. I will also be doing the firewall tub while its parked

Lol, I looked into the TMR kit. I don't feel it is necessary to shave it. With the 40's I will maintain the same clearance I had with the 37's and the 12b. If I come across another housing I may take a shot at it. The kit was a little expensive for me at this time. I got all the other brackets including the disc conversion and cover from BTF that would have been the same price just for the shave kit alone.

We built a 14b ff for a jeep Comanche about 10 years ago. We machined the ring gear down on a lathe. And used 1/2" plate on the bottom. It was kind of a college project for a buddy of mine. As far as I know he's still running it.

Have you watched that bleepin jeepin dude on YouTube and the way he did the TMR kit? Was pretty entertaining to say the least. The shave is a good deal, but I would prefer not to mess with the integrity of my gears. May be good for buggies that go high speed balls to the wall and get hung up hard when skinny pedal is applied. I'm a turtle on the rocks

Finally found time to finish cleaning up the housing for the new brackets. Got it all lined up where it needs to be and just need to tack weld and pull it back out. Waiting on my shock tabs and new u bolts then start the gearing. Whoever thought is was cool to weld a piece of 3/8" round stock all the way across he diff tubes and housing sucks. It was a PITA to cut it all off lol. But it looks beefy under the rig for sure.

So the rear is done, now I will tub the firewall next. To my surprise 65+ on highway with the DIY beadlocks and no vibrations. No balance beads or anything. The 40's must absorb all of it.

So I did a little test flexing and decided to stay with Allpro springs and will be cutting out the firewall. It is not as much as it was before with the new wheel backspacing. Also installed 1.5" wheel spacers in the rear to even out the width. I am gonna order a new set of 5" from AP. They are having a pretty decent sale right now.
