98 4Runner fresh build.
« on: Dec 11, 2016, 09:37:35 AM »
well I sold my black turbo Tacoma and now I have a 98 runner 2wd with a 3rz. planning on turboing this one as well and doin a sas. this will be a slow build as I have to start parts gathering. plans are
toyota front axle rebuilt and all stock to start.
wana try using a land cruiser steering box on this build they fit better on the Tacoma style frames
highsteer with one ton rod ends and custom arms.
leafs up front with tg shackle hanger kit.
probly lift coils for the rear at first with an adjustable Panhard bar.
35" tires or so.
rocksliders and bumpers.
w56 trans with single case 4.7s
custom built crossmember
frame plates front and rear.
probly guna build another custom fuel tank holder the taco and 4 runner fuel tank brackets are cheezy
when I get the sas done and trans t case swap and everything's driving good I'll prob find toyota e lockers and chromo front axles goodies.

well that's a rough plan of what I wana do. like I said this will be a slow build

things I've done so far:

air intake
egr delete
tune up
new radiator
guna do balance shaft delete real soon
valve cover gasket
ecu crystal mod made rpm go from 5,900 to 6,500 pretty cool mod I will post how I did that when I have a bit more time.

I'm interested in the ecu crystal mod.

Fo sho! Hook us up on that. Also why do the balance shaft delete? Just because your going to put a hair dryer on it?

ive have two 3rz toast the balance shafts so now I just delet them. it dosnt make much difference in vibration and it makes more power not having to turn the extra shafts.

http://www.dorikaze.net/showthread.php?43155-Supercharged-3RZ-AE86/page3 for any who want to kno about the ecu mod. I actually found it reading this thread.  post number 47.
I searched and searched the net for a 17.7mhz crystal and found every size but that. I finally ordered one off eBay from tawaiin. I can post some pics this evening of the crystals I ordered and junk.

keep in mind once you Change the crystal you can no longer use s scan tool on your ecu. I used a spare ecu for the mod and anytime I need to see live data or clear/read codes I'll just put my unmolested ecu in. if you get a cheap code reader and change the crystal in it as well then u can communicate with your modded ecu

does the rev limiter still work after mod, obviously at a higher rpm?

I havnt been able to hit the rev limiter yet. it's a lot harder to rev out each gear now in town cause you're goin so fast by the time you would hit rev limiter. ill try to hit it and see.

apparently there's no rev limiter after the mod I tried to hit it multiple times.

i have 30" tires on the runner right now I'm not sure what my gear ratio is but I just hit 90 in 3rd gear and wasn't even revved out but any higher seemed like over revving

so I ended up putting my unmodded ecu back in for now. without having a way to fine tune my afr it's just not running good enough to continue driving it. I drove it like this for two weeks, I don't have an afr gauge but I can tell I was running super lean everytime I would take off but once I got past that point the higher rpms are like a rocket ship. I'm planning on running some kind of piggyback ecu on the 4Runner when I slap a turbo on it. I'll probly reinstall the modded ecu when I do so Ill try to fine tune it of course having a afr gauge to monitor my tuning progress.

Well so far gathering sas parts I have highsteer with 1 ton rod ends. Used Dom with the 1 ton rod end kit from sky manufacturing. Also put together a borgeson steering shaft wich consists of all the same parts tg uses in their Tacoma steering shaft kit but I bought it all through summit. Will post up some part numbers and pictures.
