Holy Lord I need some help....
« on: Sep 10, 2016, 11:13:56 AM »
I've tried searching as to keep from bugging you guys but I have reached my last nerve.

We think my sons Clutch is out and we don't want to fully pull the tranny to figure out what we have just to be able to order parts.  I have been all over this site on the rebuilt transmission page and can't figure out what this is.     Problem is this truck has turned out to be a cobbled together mess from the PO and we're not sure what's what.

The truck used to have a 22RE in it with a W56 based off the door jam plate.  Now it has a 3.4 (not sure what year or from what) and I have zero idea what tranny he used.  It looks kind of like a R150 or 151 but then there are differences that make me believe otherwise.

On top of not knowing what trans, this is, I don't know which clutch and flywheel to order.  I'm not sure that the PO even did this right to begin with....  :smack:  :wall:  :help:

I guess my question is this, Can anyone tell, by the pictures, what trans this is?  Am I going to have to pull the trans just to figure this out?  The reason I don't want to pull it yet is because I can still move it around in the drive if need be.

Unless the PO had some badass fab skills the only two transmission it could be would be a R151 or an R150 from a 3.0/3.4. Can you get us some picture of the tail end of the transfer case? SO we can see how many bolts it has and then you can figure out what transmission it is. Go here https://www.marlincrawler.com/transfer-case/line-ups/pickup-4runner-kits ad click on transfercase bible up near thw top, then scroll down and it'll tell you how to ID it. WHich will tell you if it's a gear driven or not. If it's not then you have an R150 transmission.

Looks different than the 7 bolt posted on that Marlin link (Thanks for that by the way) so I'm guessing it's the weaker chain driven........

That does look like a chain driven T-case.

So, just to be clear, because of the 5 bolt, I have an R150 trans?

Also, I read that it's best to put a 3.4 fly wheel in, you know if that's correct?

I'm assuming I should order a 3.4 clutch too?

Thanks for the help.

There's only 3 transmissions that can bolt directly up to a 3.4, and the r151F is a gear driven T-case, and the R150F is a chain. That's how we can tell it's an R150F. As for the clutch you can run either 3.4 or 3.0 stuff from what I've read and been told.

W59 would be for a 4 cylinder correct?

my guess is r150.  Slave is on the driver side which is how the tacoma is if i remember correctly.  Being Passenger side drop tcase, I assume they swapped bell housings onto an older r150.  :dunno:

When i did my 3.4 Swap.  I used my 1990 r150 transmission/bellhousing and used the 3.0L flywheel and clutch kit.  Being that he swapped bellhousings i wonder if he used all tacoma clutch components.

SOmeone else can confirm, but I do believe that is an older R150F based on the fact that the speedo cable is there.

I called MC and they told me that I would have to pull it and send a bunch of pics to their email so they can better tell what it is and tell me what parts to order.

I'm now hearing the motor came from an 01 Tacoma.  Still have no clue on the trans.

I didn't want to pull it until I had the parts to do the rebuild because, right now, we can still move it a little if need be.  Once it's pulled, that's where she sits.
