'84 Front Axle Seals Question
« on: Sep 05, 2016, 09:09:37 PM »
Hi all,  hope everyone's had a good summer.   Been awhile since I checked in, but haven't done anything with the new X-cab 'til now anyway.

Back at the beginning of the summer I tore into the front axle to replace all the bearings and seals and upgrade to vented rotors and IFS calipers.  Then I got distracted by other summer stuff and the project sat for three+ months 'til this weekend when I decided I needed to get it done.

I bought the front axle rebuild kit from Marlin and it appears this kit comes with some extra seals... ???  Since it's been 3+ months since I tore everything apart my memory's a little foggy.

Questions:

1) Why are there four of the big orange colored seals?  Obviously I need 2 for the back of the hub, but why are there four of them?  I can't figure out where else they could possibly go.

1a) Also, how are they oriented?  With the raised lip side in, towards the center of the hub, or facing out?

2) What are the smaller black seals for?  I don't remember removing any like those and they don't seem to fit anywhere.  They're too small of diameter to go over the spindle, they just fit over the axle shaft itself but obviously they're not sealing against the splined end of the axle shaft...

Does the kit just come with a couple extra seals, or what?

I haven't been able to find any drawings that show the hub assembly.  I have drawings for the knuckles.

Can anyone help with this?

- I need two of the big orange seals for the rear of the hubs.  Do they go anywhere else that I'm missing?

- How are they oriented?  In this picture, would the raised part be up (facing out) or down (facing the bearing.)

- What are the little black seals for?

Thanks for any clues.

Cup seal flat side out, and it should be the flat one,
With hub as per pic outter race of bearing goes in first, then site bearing in, follows be seal, flat side out,
Revers on other side, outter race first, followed by bearing and slid on,
The rest is in the write up

Hey, thanks for chiming in!

So it looks like the kit came with two extra big orange seals and who knows what the little black seals are for.  That's kind of what I suspected but good to have it confirmed.  I'll be finishing this up this weekend then tackling the clutch.

those little black ones remind me of what you might see on a full float rear axle, which would pair nicely with the other two big orange seals
Sand, what fun, drop pressure to 12psi, stock tires are still digging, can't afford to get stuck, 8psi, still not working. Find a place to GET OUT, air up, un-lock hubs,  WAIT whats this, hubs are UN-LOCKED already. 2wd, 8psi, stock tires, Oregon sand dunes.

If the stepped oranage ones are same size, they come in handy when the spindle is worn a little as it will offset the seal into a good section, other advantage is they may replace the use of a speedie sleeve

Well, I'm glad the kit came with extras.  I was using the end of a section of 2x4 to tap the seal into place and it slipped and I ended up denting/bending the hell out of the seal.  Fortunately there were two extras!

I was more careful and got both of them in with no damage after that.

The driver's side is all back together now.  Tomorrow I'll tackle the passenger side and get it finished.

This truck has Superwinch hubs on it.  They're a simpler design than the Aisin hubs and don't use any cone washers nor is the snap-ring on the end of the axle used.  Hopefully they'll hold up fine...
