22r Fuel Pump -Long Term Review in Progress
« on: Jun 15, 2016, 12:47:53 PM »
This may seem silly but I am putting this thread up so maybe guys will bump into it when they are looking to buy a replacement fuel pump for their 22r.

In 20,000 miles with my fresh 22r I have tried 4 aftermarket fuel pumps from three different manufacturers.  They all went bad in about in 4,000-6,000 miles.  I was even running the required spacer so it wasn't my fault.  These were all from $40-$50 each.

I finally spent a bit more and ordered the OEM Toyota fuel pump from Jim at 22re Performance for $120.  So before you buy the junky aftermarket fuel pump for your 22r, do the math.

To be fair I haven't ran a Toyota mechanical pump before but they reportedly last a really, really long time.  I will post up if it ever fails. It comes with the proper thermal spacer to replace your old cracked and petrified original or improper aftermarket metal spacer.  This part is meant to isolate the fuel from the heat so why the aftermarket ones are metal is beyond me.  Even came with the stock brown paper gaskets.  Sweet.

Mileage on my odometer at the time of installation is 206,048.

Hi H,

Yeah, really good point about aftermarket anything you buy nowadays.  I hear there is SO much junk out there, and I have experienced it over the years buying auto parts, especially.

Your post reminds of my experience with alternators on my fist 1986 truck.  I bought/exchanged 4 alternators in 14 months from Pep Boys… all with “Life Time Warranty”.  The last one to go out was in Death Valley, CA… not a fun trip. The inconvenience to drop an alternator is a crappy job – I always had to remove the bottom radiator hose and drain the radiator!!

I ended up buying a Bosch with a 90 day warranty.  It never failed.  So… just because something is sold with a LifeTime Warranty, it may not have ANYTHING to do with the actual quality!!

Had a question on my fuel filter so I referred to this thread to get my answer.  I have 224,331 miles on the odometer so 18,283 miles on this fuel pump.  Still works good :).
