Toyota Shifter Removal
« on: Jun 03, 2016, 10:51:58 AM »
I know this has been covered here before, I have read the posts about how to take off the shift lever on a toyota, but in my case it is not working.

I have a 91 pick-up that I am trying to replace the shifter bushings. I took off the boots and got to the retainer that is holding the shift lever in place. The video I have watched show you just pushing down and twisting counter clockwise an 1/8 turn. Well, my retainer will not push down. It is not rusted in place, and I can push down on the spring below it, but the retainer will only go down maybe a 1/16 of an inch and I think it needs to go down further to be able to turn.

Could the lower bushing have broken and be stuck below the retainer not allowing it to be pushed down?

It only goes down about 1/16". Try turning it while your pushing down. Shoot some oil on it and let it soak in.

Some times it just takes the willingness to give a bit of blood to the Toyota gods.
Get rough with it. It's got to come out.fingers and a rag.
