1989 4 Runner W56-C Oil Capacity???
« on: May 18, 2016, 06:39:38 PM »
Can't get the fill plug out of the side of my W56-C.  I've basically destroyed the bolt head at this point.  It was kind of messed up when I started - someone had already partially stripped it and the plug is totally seized.  A 6-point socket ended up spinning on it, so I give up.

In order to get oil back in it I'm going to pour it in through the shifter hole in the top.  The Chiltons manual says 4-7 pints but of course it covers a lot of years and transmissions and doesn't specify anything but "fill to overflow".   That's kind of a big range...

I found one web page where a guy outlines the change & fill procedure and he says 2.3 qts. - and I just realized that's for a '98, not an '89...   I figured I should double-check.

The transmission is out of an '89 4Runner, so if anyone knows the specific recommendation for that trans, that would be helpful.  Google is returning all kinds of discussions about what oil to use and how to change it, but no specific capacity recommendations.

Thanks!

Have you considered welding a nut to the fill plug so you can get it off? Then replacing with one of the low profile hex style plugs found here: https://www.marlincrawler.com/transfer-case/parts-upgrade/tc-hilux/low-profile-magnetic-drain-plug-alum-gasket

To answer your question it is 3.2 quarts capacity, however most guys just put in a full 3 quarts. Make sure you let it drain for a period of at least 2-3 hours if not overnight to get all your old fluid out before putting in your new fluid.

Thanks!!

I don't have a welder, so not an option.  And why would I need a low profile hex with a magnet on the fill plug?

If I ever do have to get that plug out I'll take it to a shop and let them weld a nut onto it.  That is, if I don't get my own welder first...

Its not about the magnet its about the hex method of tightening and removing. It will eliminate your problem of stripping from happening again.  :wink2:

Ah, I see.  An internal hex.  Of course, not acting like a gorilla when tightening the plug would probably help too.

Vice Grips won't work?

Nope. They just rip more material off the bolt head (it's pretty soft metal).  I didn't want to get too medieval on it in case the reason it was stuck is because it's cross-threaded or something.  Tearing the threads out of the case would really suck.

Thanks for the help!  Mission accomplished.

Oooohhh, a wise guy, huh?  :eyebrow:

Actually, I searched "W56 capacity" on this forum and no answer came up.

I see now it does come up if you search the entire board, but it's in a different forum.  Somehow I didn't think to search the whole board.  I was thinking if it was here it would be in the transmission forum...
