STICKING CALIPERS: Severe daily mud.
« on: Mar 21, 2016, 10:48:22 AM »
In my younger years I did a lot of mud wheeling.  Stuff on these things holds up pretty well for occasional or even by-weekly dunkings based on my experience.  The last year with our house project and our driveway with 30" ruts filled with milkshake mud was a whole new experience.  Twice a day, every day for a year or so we drove through this hole.

We have had our new driveway for about 5 months and I am still fixing stuff!  The gunk finished off the high mileage rear wheel bearings on both Toyotas. The worst of it was sticking front calipers on the 4Runner.  One side was locked up on each end and this gets your rotors out really fast.

When I took things apart I found the drain hole on the spindles were pluged up with grout.  Grease in the wheel bearings was rusty and even a bit dirty on one side.

My last brake job was done with fresh but salvaged parts off a 1st gen parts axle I had.  I went ahead and had my old FJ60 rotors freshened up and put on some re-manufactured V6 calipers this time.

Update after a few drives:  Noticed the V6 calipers paired with the smaller booster and master cyl give a softer pedal. The brakes are good, it just feels, I don't know, GM-ish, if that makes any sense.  I will be scrounging for a dual diaphragm booster and the large master cyl.

And for any newbs:  This is a good trick.  You can use a drive line bolt and nut to plug up your brake lines while doing work so all your fluid doesn't run out on the ground.  Way better than pinching the rubber lines shut with vise grips!  Not too tight just snug!

No that's out old access.  I will post a pic of the new one.  We have culverts now so we don't have to ford.  It's pretty high tech ;).
