I don't think the filter(s) are the problem - it is as though the carbie is getting too much fuel which the seals can't hold. I'm guessing the needle and seat are the start of the problem, but I spoke to a friend who just rebuilt a Quadrajet for his V8 Hilux and he is happy to rebuild another one! It's a bit annoying that the carbie seemed absolutely fine on the other engine but now isn't on mine, but that is just life I guess.

I didn't shim up the starter, I didn't think I would need to. Don't they normally just bolt up? With the correct bolts the new starter motor works a treat :) just need to sort out this carbie and I am back on the road! Or track...

Unless it's a newer (in the US 95.5 up)vortec engine it should be shimmed. I have had at least 50 sbc engines and every one of them except vortec required shims to get starter to engage correctly and quietly

Quadra junk internal filters collapse alot

That's why you only use the stone filters.  Not the paper ones.  My setup was a 750 CFM Quadrajet by Carter manufactured for GMC, on a SBC 305.   :eyebrow:   Yeah, my 78 El Camino was a slug off the line, (more like flooded) but get me rolling, and then mash it!  Toilet bowl!!!!  That carb was for a big block too!!   :rofl2:

And yes, it was made by Carter, you did not read that wrong.  ;)

I kept meaning to post on here but I have been busy. Anyway, lots to update.

I took the advice of some earlier posts and with a friend's help rebuilt the carbie. Bought a kit, stripped it down, thoroughly cleaned everything and re-assembled.

Fitted it back on to the car and plumbed it up, and it started up straight away. It's a substantial improvement over what was there, still needs a tune by someone who really knows what they're doing but it runs well enough for now.

To properly test it out, that weekend the same friend and I decided to try and re-open an old track that nobody has been down for a while. We had to move lots of trees out of our way and were eventually stopped by one that was just too big.

I ended up having to get winched back over that log due to lack of tailshaft clearance :(

Reversing back up that track was a bit interesting, but we managed. We will return on another occasion with a chainsaw and hopefully get further. I also took this picture which I rather like:

Also, I had noticed that my front parkers were rather faded and one had a slight crack. So $16 to my door later, I had these. They even say Toyota on them!

That's it for now, hopefully more fun stuff soon

Just from eBay. The seller is called jom_racing. There is a surprising amount of reproduction parts on eBay for these shaped Hiluxs. I have bought window winders, a bonnet release cable and a window regulator brand new for this in the past, and one of the previous owners also fitted a brand new bonnet.

I also worked out why sometimes this gets a little hot and probably why it is so slow. Turns out I have a blown head gasket! So a gasket kit has been ordered and there is next weekend sorted out for me.

I have been a bit lazy updating this, but here we go :)

Head gaskets have been changed. Other than an entire engine swap it was the first time I had done any serious work on a piston engine for over five years but I got it done in the end and the car is running noticeably better now. I understand now why bogans worldwide worship these engines, they are very easy to work on. I am not sure how long the gasket(s) had been blown for but the car is surprisingly quicker now than it has ever been with this engine so possibly a while. It's strange, this 307 ran very well in the Land Cruiser I removed it from but has never quite been the same since it went in the Hilux. Oh well, job now done.

I haven't done a lot of wheeling as of late, as all of the tracks around my place get seasonally closed in mid-June. I went for a play the weekend before and it was very, very sloppy. Good fun for a bit but eventually I got very stuck! I am starting to think I need to get a winch haha, ended up having to wait for it to dry up a bit before I could move. Got out by going backwards in the end :)

Haven't done much else except for cruise around in it since then, no wheeling at all :( however, the friend who owns the single cab pictured above just scored this:

Looks a little rough but it isn't too bad at all, not much rust, a few dents, but also setup for a V8 ;) it came with a lot of spare parts, and also this roll bar that my friend didn't want:

I am not going to use it for anything as such but I have always thought they looked cool. More updates soon when something happens

Minor update, I've been busy moving house so I haven't done much to this thing, until the last week or so. My friend who bought the other dual cab gave me his door trims as he is going to make his own since they had been badly painted black. I always liked these things with blue interiors, it really set off the 80s cool in my opinion, but any door trims are hard to find, let alone good blue ones. Luckily, someone invented vinyl dye...

I was actually quite impressed with how they came up. I went to install them but the bottoms of the doors didn't look good so I gave them a coat of satin black.

All in all I was quite happy and had an unusual burst of motivation. One of the speakers had recently stopped working and I had never been happy with the head unit or amp location. So I purchased some new speakers, speaker cables and an amp wiring kit. I'll do the head unit later. I decided that the amp was best located behind the rear seat so I took all of that out. For those interested, here is what behind the rear seat in one of these looks like:

I gave everything a clean for probably the first time since 1982 (these rear seats don't fold forward) and mounted the amp and then ran all of my new cables in. This is what the original seat pattern is. The front seats were replaced before I bought it, does anyone know if this is SR5 seat material or anything?

I finished wiring up and installing everything. Previously the amp was mounted on the parcel tray in the passenger footwell, and every time I went over a big bump out bush, it would jump off. I am much happier with the result now.

Unfortunately the door cards had been previously cut differently and I couldn't quite hide the old holes. But oh well, I happy enough with this given the car's intended purpose. Just need to order some matching door handles and winders from eBay and they will be done :)

Well, a couple of weeks ago this happened:

Suspected bottom end bearing. Although I did manage to get it running again the next day. Don't think I'll be driving it far though  :shakehead: luckily, a day or two before I went and retrieved this:

This is the old 350 that was originally in the car. I finally have somewhere I can actually pull this down for a rebuild now, which is good as given how much tougher the car sounded with this engine I always wanted to know what it had. The 307 is as far as I know a standard motor fitted with fuellie heads.

Now I can buy a crate motor for about AU$3,000, but that is the low performance long motor. Plus where economically possible I prefer to work with what I have than replace. And for what it's worth this is the V8 that the car has been registered with since 1994, so I think they should stay together for a bit longer :)

So the dismantling began:

Yella Terra roller rockers  :yesnod:

Flat top pistons!

Bores look good to my un-trained eye:

Heads off, turned over and ready to pull the bottom end apart tomorrow:

So obviously at some point some point someone has spent a bit of money on this. Now all I really want from this is a reliable 4wd with a bit of extra power that can comfortably tow a car, so I will re-use what I can but aside from a 'towing' camshaft I won't modify it any further. Just keep it fun and reliable.

The current plan is to get the block down to the local engine machinist and get it acid bathed, checked and honed. I will then re-assemble it with new rings, bearings, gaskets etc, with the plan being to have it back in and running by the end of November. This will then give me enough time to get a new exhaust, run it in and check for any issues before hopefully having some trouble-free motoring, and more importantly 4wding, over the summer break!

Engine is now completely dismantled, and the engine block is sitting in the Hilux's tub wrapped up ready to go the engine builder. Hopefully I can get it there one day this week after work! Pistons, rods and the crank all look pretty good and even the camshaft did so I'll be dropping everything off to get checked and the less I have to buy, the better. Fingers crossed I can get it all back together and going for the Christmas break :)

I've always wanted to go to Tasmania, I have heard it is beautiful. No big trips planned at this stage, I'll probably mostly go on day trips or maybe an overnighter. I won't want to push it too far until I have put some milage on it and made sure it is reliable.

Turns out the block wasn't quite as good as I thought but it's not the end of the world. The bores were already .030" over and will have to go to .040", meaning new pistons also. I am waiting for the machine shop to finish doing all of that, hopefully within the next two weeks.

It sure is. If you ever want to plan a trip down here let me know and I'll help with what tracks and sights are worth seeing etc.

Wow, that all looks really nice! Very beautiful scenery. I am definitely keen to do a trip to Tasmania in a 4wd. Will definitely let you know if I do. Half the problem I have is no other 4wds to go on a long trip like this with!

I am just waiting for my new flywheel to arrive (hurry up US Postal Service!) and then I can drop off everything to be balanced. Still looking at having this thing driving again in a few weeks and getting lots of use from it this summer :)

And finally, I have briefly added this rusty beast to my fleet:

I went to look at it hoping for a good front guard. The only non-rusty panel it had was the one I needed! Came with a couple of other goodies including this long-range tank:

Even though I prefer the square headlight front, I am considering putting  the round light front on just to spin people out, because the dual cabs never came with round headlights in Australia at least.

Well I have been busy and everything seems to be taking longer than planned but we are getting somewhere. My new flywheel arrived so I was then able to drop everything off to the engine place for the rotating assembly to be balanced. The bottom end should be ready to pick up by mid-week. I also dropped the heads off to be rebuilt and the guy there thought they 'looked pretty good' so hopefully that means quick and cheap.

I've had a bit of trouble finding a mechanical fuel pump that will not hit the front diff control arm but have finally found a Holley unit which just clears. As well as that I have bought a lot of new bolts, bolt-ons and whatnot to hopefully ensure no more problems. The old engine is pretty much ready for removal, so the plan is to remove that next weekend and clean up the engine bay a bit, and then hopefully the weekend after drop another engine in!

Anyone who is still paying attention may have worked out that I didn't get the engine back together and driving before Christmas. These people would be right. I ran into a few issues. The main issue being the heads. At some point someone had sourced a set of Corvette LT heads for the engine. Unfortunately, for whatever reason they were both cracked, one quite badly, in the combustion chamber. So now I am up for another set of heads :( will probably get some brand new ones since they are the same price or cheaper as sourcing a set and re-conditioning them.

Given this and the fact that all my friends broke their 4wds, this seemed like an excellent opportunity to get a few extra things done to the car that I sort of wanted to do at some point. I decided to start with the engine bay. When the car received the satin black paint job the engine bay was forgotten about. So I decided to resolve this:

It's not an especially professional job but it will do.

Then there were the wheels. Initially I liked them white but decided that I preferred black, especially when mine started looking a mix of off-white and rust. So I had the wheels powdercoated black:

And then had them fitted with a set of 33x12.5 Achilles Desert Hawk Mud Terrain tyres :)

Last week a friend and I started to assemble the bottom end of the engine:

There's a few other jobs I'd like to do before the car ends up back on the road. The handbrake cable needs to be replaced so I will do that. I'd also like to do something about all of the old red paint showing through. And depending on how keen I get, potentially upgrade my gearbox to an R150F while the car is off the road. I won't have anybody to go 4wding with for at least a month so I may as well try and get as much done now as I can.

Well funnily enough I really like your truck! I wish I could roll around here with mine looking like that, the police would have it off the road in a matter of minutes!

I got a bit more done this weekend. My handbrake cable had somehow become caught and as a result bent in the cabin, leaving me with no handbrake. So I purchased a new handbrake cable from eBay and set about sorting that out. Lever out, cleaned and greased up:

I don't know what this part is called but it had broken slightly on mine. Luckily one from the 1992 model I found at a wrecker was the same. After a bit of a clean:

And all installed:

Then it was time to have a look at the R150F I have to see what condition it was in. I picked it up very cheap last year, mostly to use for measuring up and comparing to the G52. A friend who used to rebuild gearboxes for a living offered to help me pull it apart and have a look, so firstly off came the transfer case:

I took it over to his house and we pulled the front and rear cases off:

Until we were left with the gearset:

I wasn't expecting anything good given the surface rust on the input shaft but to my delight the whole thing is in very good condition! No broken gears, and all of the syncros and bearings are in good condition. So I took the cases back home to give a through clean:

I remember reading somewhere on here about a front bearing that is prone to wearing out so that may get replaced but otherwise it'll get new front and rear seals and then go back together. After that I will need to re-drill my bell housing to suit the R150F bolt pattern, get an adapter to bolt the R1FA transfer case to the R150F, and then bolt it all in with the engine and see what needs modifying to make everything work and bolt up. At the very least it will be a gearbox crossmember and both driveshafts.

I have been invited away camping for the Easter weekend, so I am aiming to have everything back together, run it and tuned by then. So I have two months before I need to worry :)

Engine progress isn't going anywhere at the moment, so I decided to whip out some power tools and my new welder and have a go at welding up the hole in the rear quarter panel that was made when the LPG filler was fitted. Now that this thing is no longer on barbecue fuel it really needed to go. I haven't welded for a long time and I was fairly well squashed between a fence and a Hilux so this didn't go brilliantly but well enough.

I started with this:

And ended up with this:

I have since ground it down and touched it up so it looks a lot less :pokinit:. On the plus side, I made use of my tailgate as a workbench:
