hey all,  i wonder if you could help me diagonse a prob.
my tranny locked up and i had to replace 5th gear and 5th counter gear due to the bearing behind the 5th counter gear letting go and the trash chipping some teeth, and after reinstalling the tranny i've noticed the same noise i had before it locked up.  it's more of a rumble or consistant clunking that is quiet when it's cold, but is soon noticable after the truck warms.  it goes AWAY when i press the clutch.  it's in ALL gears, including neutral.  shifts easy, or better after i changed the shifter seat and bushing, and goes into all the gears without any hesitation.
i'd lean toward the input shaft bearing, but from my research and reading forums it would seem the noise would go away in 4th gear..........this confuses me.
before i reinstalled the tranny i'd noticed "some" slight noise by turning the input shaft by hand, but i thought it was due to the fact that there was no fluid in the tranny at the time.  the transfer case is quiet and smooth.  the sound clearly comes from the rear of the engine and front of the tranny.   i can feel a small vibration in the shifter as well.
thanx ya'll

yeah it sounds like a bearing going out, just to be safe drain the fluid and check for metal shavings, if there is not any then go ahead and put it back in if ur gunna drive it more, is the truck shaking when ur gitting on the gas or when u let off, but it sounds like theres a bearing thats going out. hope that helps

bamayote

thanx yotaboy for the reply.
there were no shavings or teeth or any metal parts in the fluid and it's as smooth as silk on the shift, acceleration and decel.
any idea which bearing it is?  am i on the right track with the input shaft bearing?
thanx

its hard to tell which bearing it is with out pulling it apartmy best guess would be the input or output, im thinkin its the out put because the inputs are usualy pritty hard to mess up, although i managed to blow up a input shaft bearing on mine. id find out what the specs are, tear it down and check every thing and make shure that every bearing and shaft is at the right tolerence, im sure that if u give it a little time marlin will work his way over to this question, he can give u a much better idea of what is wrong. or u can messenge him. hope that helps

im gunna go out to the shop tonight to answer some questions that are running through my mind for that tranny, ill get back to u after that

brainlessfool

for my $ its your imput bearing.  noise goes away with the clutch in and stays in all gears. if it was the counter shaft it would go away in 4th. the only time the imput is not truning is with the clutch in.
A good day working, that's just sick :reg:

yotaboy79

yeah i didnt think about that

The real reason why the 5th speed gears went away is because the center mainshaft bearing is bad. You may of also had a bad rear countershaft bearing, but that was not your real problem.
Once the center mainshaft bearing goes bad, it allows the 5th speed gears to run out of line which broke the teeth
.
Stop driving the truck. You are going to break the gears again. :driving:

This trans needs to be complety dissasembled, thoroughly cleaned and properly rebuilt.

so..............  yes it sounds like it's going to be shipped to california.......lol
one last question.      i'm assuming the input shaft bearing and the main shaft bearing are different animals.  the main shaft bearing is behind the input shaft bearing aint it.......lol           just trying to the the anatomy right in my head,  my drawings i've recieved off the net aren't completely labelled.
thanx marlin!!
