New guy with a question
« on: Jan 10, 2016, 05:47:52 AM »
Guys I'm working on my 84 and picked up some 4 cyl yukon 4.88's and master install kits. After my gear purchase I picked up 2 v6 parts trucks. Can I run the 4cyl gears in the v6 axle? If so what do I need to make this happen? Also would it be beneficial (if even possible) to run one of the v6 3rd's in the front 4cyl housing?  I still need to pick up lockers so I'm guessing v6 versions are in order to make this work. Advise is greatly appreciated fellas :smokin:

ALOHA BANAACLIP

THE V6 3rd WILL FIT IN THE '84 DIFFS.   THEY ARE A BEEFIER CARRIER SO STRINGER.  I BELIEVE THE V6 RING GEAR IS THINKER THEN THE 4 CYLINDER RING GEARS.

I'VE HEARD OF SOME FOLKS USING A SPACER TO INCREASE THE THINKNESS OF THE 4 CYLINDER RING GEAR SO THEY CAN USE THEM IN A V6 DIFF.   I DON'T KNOW WHERE THEY GET THE SPACERS OR EVEN IF DOING THIS IS A GOOD IDEA ? ? ?

BEST OF LUCK TO U.       😎🌴

As far as running the V6 3rd in your 4cyl axel it will bolt right in no modification need. You can pretty much run out and grab any 8" 3rd and slap em in any 8" axle. When I put my V6 3rd in my solid front I just got a V6 gear set but it's always better to use what you already have. Spacing or shining it sounds like it could work but may run into issue's on the setup.  Only other thing to watch out for is the factory 4.88 3rd something with how they have a different casting  from the rest were you either can't or it's a pain to install any different gear size. Good luck

I read your question and if I understand correctly you are wanting to put the ifs v6 rear axle housing into your 84 truck using the 4cyl 8" diff correct? If so, yes you can absolutely do that. Just build the 4cyl diff with 4cyl gears and drop it in the housing. Just dont try to put the 4cyl gears on the v6 3rd member and vice versa.
