Chromoly axle upgrade for IFS Toy.....Preferences?
« on: Sep 10, 2013, 10:39:32 AM »
I'm going to be upgrading my axles and CV's to chromoly. I run a '91 V6 IFS with spartan locker and 33x12.5's (eventually 35's) and don't want to break my axle (or at least limit it to deserved occasions). Trying to get the best bang for the buck. Sticking with 27 spline. What company part do you recommend? Allpro? Marlin? Longfield?

Also, i know a company that sells an aftermarket extra strong CV boot. Can't remember the company. Any help?

I'm aware of RCV's product...but damn expensive. AllPro/Longfield show axles and birfields for '86-up trucks. Birfields are just a part of the CV joint right? Same thing right? (Obviously not a mechanic)

Well, sorted that out. Sorry for the dumb question. They list it for post '86 front axles, but they mean post SAS.

If it's post SAS it's for a damn pre '86 axle that you decided to put on it. Am i crazy?  :hammerhead:

If you buy napa re-man CVs they will warrantee them all day long, as many as you can break.

Ya, carry a spare, and get ones with a great warranty.  While I was still ifs, I never broke a CV (I still have a new CV sitting in my garage).  And I ran 35s on them for at least a year before SAS.

I've only broken 1 yota CV and that was due to me completely breaking the axle housing off of the frame.... I've grenaded 3 or 4 front ifs ring and pinions though... I worry about the diff way more than i worry about the cv's...

CVJ Reman makes custom chromoly CV shafts with high angle joints and high angle boots.  They are an awesome product.  I have them them on my long arm IFS, but he can make stock lengths too.

I wouldn't worry about your CVs as much as other stuff like balljoints and the diff itself. I beat the ever living piss out of my IFS before I SASd this past winter. I blew only one CV the whole time and the boots were all ripped for the majority of the time. And my front was welded
