Idle Air Control Valve
« on: Jul 15, 2015, 01:18:30 PM »
I have a bad I.A.C Valve on my '87 22re. Online I've found 30 pages of people experiencing the same problem, but can't seem to locate a new part. Does anyone have one for sale or know where I can find the part?

Have you tried to clean the existing one?

Call Toyota or an import parts dealer in your area if you have one, and see what years the factory part is listed to fit, you may be able to use a '89 or newer one.  If so, Rockauto has them for around $100.

I think an 87 is like the 86.

Does it have 2 heater hoses, 2 air hoses and an electrical connector?

If so, an 89 won't work.

If it is as described, it may just be the electric wires and connector which you should be able to fix.

Use jumper wires to connect battery positive and ground directly to it and see if it works.  (take the front plastic off to see what's happening with the bimetallic strip inside)

Next step is to take it apart (not just the front cover) and see if it's fixable.

Those 1st generation IACs are not available anymore "new'.  I was concerned mine was going and called around looking for one and finally Jerry at 22re performance told me they aren't available. Mine ended up being ok and just some bad wiring.

During my researching of this issue I found that there is a way to update the Intake plenum/throttle body to the later model TB that doesn't use that early IAC (or not at all cant' remember).

Here is one of the posts I bookmarked and should start you in the right direction.

I had good luck with hard to find parts from yotayard in Colorado. Maybe reach out to them if either way.. for an IAC or if you decide to swap.
