Should be in the FSM. I don't remember for sure but, I thought you put a vacuum on it at idle and it will run like crap or stall.

I tapped and plugged my EGR port at the intake manifold to keep crud out of the intake. Never noticed a difference in how it ran. I even forgot to pull the plug out before an emissions test and it still passed with no problems.

If you want to use a vacuum gauge, you tee into the line, run the gauge into the cab and drive the thing. Since smogs are done on a dyno, you need to see what vacuum (or if you get vacuum) under realtime load.
If you just want to see if the egr valve is working, start the truck, apply manifold vacuum to the valve(not the transducer, the valve) and the engine should start missing horribly or die. You can suck on the vacuum line if you want, it works the same.

Usually, I do the apply vacuum test first, to see if the valve diaphragm is good, and if the tube is plugged. Once you have determined that, move on to testing the vacuum under load(the first one i mentioned). Lastly, if your truck has it, test the transducer valve. it is the flying saucer shaped valve above the EGR valve with vacuum in, vac out and pressure in from the exhaust on the bottom.

Hope that helps.

second picture, on the top there is a nipple. plug your fingers over that nipple and flip it upside down. On the other side of the nipple you will see these open vents for the valve. use a screw driver and push the valve in.. when you push in the valve release finger from the nipple and then replug it. when you plug it up, after you press in the valve and let go... the valve should stay where its at. once you release your finger the valve should pop back. if it moves while your finger is plug, then your egr valve is bad..

I know this is an old thread, but good info.

I just went to smog my dads 3rd gen(1990) truck with 22re, and it passed everything with flying colors.  HC's were low, everything was low and passing.  THe tech checked the EGR, and the EGR worked when he put vacuum to it.  He flipped the line around, and reved the motor.  told me it should be getting vacuum, and it wasn't.  so he failed it.  I was under the impression the EGR only gets vacuum under load.  am I wrong?  Do you see vacuum if you simply rev the motor?  it was a idle and 2500 rpm smog, not a dyno smog.  any help would be appreciated.
