Every time I have seen someone cut the back out and make it a walkthrough, I think it 100% looks like trash.  if you want to cut the cab out and make it strictly a wheeler, that is one thing, but I would not plan on doing something and making it as weather tight as a 1st gen 4runner.

Agreed. Get a 4Runner or just bolt some seats in the bed.

It is super easy to just swap a 4runner body over.  You just need to weld up the rear 4 body mounts.  You all ready have a solid axle frame, so I would tend to want to keep that.  Just find a trashed, non-running 84-89 4Runner for a few hundred bucks and you will have everything you need.

Make sure you get the title and  it doesnt have 5years of back fees, since i could imagine being in Kalifornia, this has potential to be a headache.

You would basically be building a Trailblazer or Trekker, which were custom built by Winnebago and Griffen.  I would take a look at those, and see if that is something you want/have the skills to build, before cutting anything.

It will likely be cheaper/quicker to just buy/build a 1st gen Runner, then sell your '84, or keep if your wife wants to drive as well.

The overall idea is good. But as the other guys said it's a lot of work, at least not to be a hack job and everyone I've seen even when done well looks just like... well a hack job. Think about not just cutting the bulk head of the bed , the rear of the cab. But also how to close the side and bottom gap between the two. You could always rig up some sort of soft top and figure out a weather proof seal. Also while it may not be an issue how is the body work between cab/bed going to hold up with a little off road body flex. I think the last thing anyone here wants to do is slow any creative ideas. But you have a great looking truck hate to see it go past the point of no return only to realize these issues. Good luck though no matter which way you decide to take it

What's the reason you wanna do this, family growing, maybe you could install bench seat in rear, and pull out rear window

while I am not saying you don't have fab skills, winnebego and griffin might have a little more in terms of research and tools at their disposal...

homebuilt like that usually doesn't end up well

I would do a cab swap

also, I forget which is which, but the floor of the bed on 1 of them is lower than the otehr, and it raises an issue with the feet area for the rear passengers, I think they wont have a feet area, on a pickup bed, but they do on a 4runner

Dumb question, why not sell this pickup and get a 4runner to build?

Here's an another idea you could think about. Get a nice soft top. I'm sure someone makes one fairly close to the tops for 1st gen 4runner's. A hard cap would just be wsy to heavy off road. Then get an accordion boot. They are actually made to work together with a hard cap were you remove the rear sliding window and it connects to both truck and cap. But Im sure you could make something work with the soft top. Maybe build some sort of ply wood bulk head to attach the boot and create a weather proof seal. Just throwing out options,  I know how tough it is to need the extra room but you already have a good starting platform with your truck now
