Wheelbase questions...
« on: Mar 23, 2005, 07:03:09 AM »
Ok all-

at the point where I am figuring the best wheelbase to run. '82 which was 102", has been stretched to about 106" at this point, I have the option to take it out another inch with my spring mounting point. What is the sweet spot to run? I know that when I had gone out with the heeps, I had a much easier time with the majority of the trails with my wheelbase then they did. Years ago I seem to remember that the "rockcrawlers" were being put around 110", can't seem to find too much info now. Seems they are going back down again.
I am not planning on competing in anything, this will be a driver that is set up for most if not all trails. Looking to see what wheelbase you are all shooting for or have found has worked best for you. I love rockcrawling and am not afraid or damage, toy axles planning on 38's with my 4.3.
thanks in advance,

It depends on what you run with your toy axles 106 will work well for you with turning and on inclins and decents.  although with a 38 inch tire you want that extra inch to help clear the tire. it wont hurt performance

My 85 extended cab long bed is about 111", stock should be 112.5" I think.  I think my lift pulled the rear axle forward a bit.  My wheel base works great in Moab, but is a bit long for some of the tight sections in Washington State...too many trees!  I made it down Blackbear Pass in Colorado without any turning problems.  In Moab Dump Bump seems to be easier for long wheel base rigs and I have seem many pictures of standard cab Toys going up with ease so I should think that 106" range would be great!  I would doubt if you can really tell a difference on the trails with a 1 inch difference.  Shorter is better in some places and longer is better in others.  I think that 106" is long enough and would suggest keeping it that length to slightly improve maneuverability.
1989 4Runner: Dual Ultimate (Inchworm front & Marlin 4.70 rear), Marlin Twin Stick, 1200-lb clutch, 4.88 R&P, Aussie Front, Detroit rear, 30-spline Longs, Long hub gears, ARP hub and knuckle studs & 35x12.50 Cooper STT PRO tires.  Marlin rear bumper & sliders.  FROR front bumper.  SAS with Alcan springs & Rancho 9000XL shocks.  Budbuilt Bolt-on traction bar.  Custom Interior Cage by Those Guys Rod and Customs.

Moab Tested & Rubicon Approved

mine is at 115" right now.  I think right around 106-108 is pretty good.  I have had a few problems with my longer wheelbase were a friends toyota (106") goes right through the spot were i had trouble.  this was on the rubicon.  Although, once i get the 4.7 and front locker it won't be a problem.

Around 114". A little more stable on climbs and drops, but three pointers are mandatory for tight turns.
How you 'sposed to know what your limitations are, till you exceed them.
