R151F noise
« on: Oct 08, 2014, 09:00:11 PM »
 :dunno:
2 years ago I found a R151F with the 23 spline T-Case.  I bought it, a set of FROR twin sticks, and all new marlin seals for it.  I cleaned it out and dumped fresh Lucas Gear oil in it.  I also had to buy heavy duty detent ball springs to help hold the twin sticks in gear.  The tranny works flawlessly. But when I shift into neutral while driving or back out of the throttle in gear, it has a terrible whining noise.  Sounds like a bad bearing. I get no noise when under power.  Does anyone else who has a R150 or R151f have this noise problem?  Or is it a worn gear issue instead of a bearing?

I had the same problem after I lifted the truck. Everybody told me I needed a CV type rear drive line but I didn't believe it. My u-joints were all within limits. What's a CV going to do for me? It was fine until I went to 63" Chevy springs and short shackles for minimal lift.

I checked magnets for metal, changed oil and finally pulled everything apart. It sounded like a failing bearing. Sounded like it was going to grenade when I hit the off ramps at 80 MPH. Found nothing wrong. A lot of work for nothing.

Went to a CV type rear shaft and no more noise. Don't forget to rotate axle housing for proper drive line angles.

Goto FWD  (remove rear drive shaft) and see what happens.

Well I don't have to worry about it. I fixed the fork in my w56 and I swapped it back in before I sold my truck. I pulled the r151f to sell separately . Let me know if u know anyone who wants one.

RIP KYOTA

You can go through life being scared of the possible, or you can have a little fun and tease the inevitable.

Give a man venison, he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to hunt Blacktail, he'll be frustrated for life!
