Fj40 F/axle VS Toyota F/axle
« on: Jul 16, 2003, 09:29:01 PM »
I found a front fj40 axle w/3rd member no knuckle or spindle.
How strong is it? VS toyota truck axle?
Is knuckle & spindle interchange w/mini truck?
Anyone running fj40 f/axle in their mini truck?

If the axles are a fine spline, then they are same strength.
Otherwise it's a drum front brake with corse spline - weak - birfields.

Yes however I have never done one myself. Many Cruiser owns convert to the Vented Minitruck front Disk Brakes and use Minitruck outter axles (birfields/longfields).

You crack me up.  :disturbed:

Many Cruiser owners that have done mini disk conversions have converted to the later model CRUISER vented rotors.

The cruiser "disk" spindle is the same p/n as minitruck. Drum spindle is different.

I did just that, upgraded an early Cruiser drum brake housing to vented fj 60 rotors and IFS calipers. The calipers have vent ribs that will need to be ground off unless you run wheel spacer/adapters.

In fact all the parts are available for sale. New wheel bearings, and hub seals, rotors, hubs and calipers. Can be used on a mini truck or Cruiser. msmythe@iei.net if ya want more info.

So how about the rest of the cruiser axle, could it be used under a mini truck?  Width?  #rd member interchange?  Reason I ask is my neighbor has an early 70's fj40 that is most of the way rusted into the ground in the brush behind his house.  He sold all the usable body and trim stuff but if the housings worked under a mini truck I might have to get the skidder and go drag it home.
