4.88 or 4.56 with 31's
« on: Feb 12, 2014, 10:20:30 PM »
I've got an 84 toyota with 22r with a weber carb, wanting to regear. The truck is driven on highway to and from the beach, will 4.88 be to low or should I be going 4.56? Anyone running this combo that could give me some rpm numbers would be great

V6 5speed trucks with 31"s came with 4.56 diffs from the factory.
If i were you i would consider buying used diffs in that ratio and trying it!

With 4.88s you're slightly low, but will be perfect if you ever go to 33s.

I'm running 32/11.50/15's on a 83 5 speed with 22r and new 4:88's, for me it's a good combo. Changed out the trans and transfer to 2nd gen. As for rpms I have no numbers but they are not out of line or extreme in any gear and I can use 5th.

David that's good info, thank u, I feel like 4.56 would get me back to stock but I'm very tempted to do 4.88, I just don't wanna be running 4k in 5th at 70

I have an 89 extra cab 22re 5 speed with 31/10.5/R15 and 4.56 gears and the speedo is within 1 mph of being accurate.  It was a big improvement going from the stock 4.10 to the 4.56 gears.  If I were to go 33's then go 4.88.  Turning just a hair over 3000 rpm at 70 mph in 5th gear.

I had a very similar experience with my 4runner. 1990 4runner 4cyl 5 speed with 31s and 4.11s was perfect. taching 2850 at 70mph. When i switched to a 33in tire, i couldnt pull 5th gear comfortably with 4.11s. When switched to 4.88s and 33s, I'm taching right at 3000 at 70mph in 5th gear. Perfect for my setup and roads i take.

I have an 83 pick-up a pair of Marlin cases, a W56C and 35 inch tires. It has 4.88's and does 80 on the highway. My brother has an 86 4Runner with 35's, 4.88's, and dual cases. It does 80 on the highway easy. My 85 22RE 4Runner w/W56A, stock everything does 85 down the highway with 31's. I can't help but wonder if it's not the California emission junk that's killing performance out there. I live in Texas by the way.

I'm in Texas lol mines 84, 22r with weber carb, 4 inch lift, 31's on 15x8 wheels, it will go 70 but that's to the floor completely, and in 4th, it will hold the speed in 5th but only if I have it to the floor

if your going to run 31's id say keep your 4.10's or even better find some 4.37's or 4.56's on the cheap. if your going to regear your current diffs i recomend going atleast 4.88 and getting 33's asap you can get by with 31's an 4.88 but have high rpm around 60mph.  if you ever see yourself wanting 35s or bigger get 5.29s and be done. 4.88 are ok with 35s but 5.29 is much better. remember you only want to do this once.  :twocents:

toyodaaddict  pretty well summed it up. I don't know where you are in Texas, but there are a couple of wrecking yards on the south side of San Antonio with a bunch of the 86 to 89 automatic 4Runners which had 4.37 and some 4.56 gears.

i have 4.88's, 31's w/ a 4cyl in my 87 4runner and I don't mind it.  Its a little low, but helps out with my gutless 22re :)  I actually like highway driving better now than before with my 4.10's.  I don't have to downshift into 3rd to go up a gradual hill anymore.

If you're going to stay with 31's, 4.56's are a perfect match. I ran this combo for years.

If you even THINK you will go bigger..........and you probably will....... go with the 4.88's. Perfect for 33's and your engine.
