2.7 to a340f????????
« on: Jan 22, 2014, 05:06:59 PM »
So my 22re timing chain broke on me the other day :rivers: I am having a hard time deciding what to do.

1:   Rebuild the 22re boar the cylinders new pistons and rings bigger cam about 600-7000$

2: motor swap. I have the a340f auto and there is no support out there for it. No 4.3 bel housing adapter.
Or any other motors for that fact.

3: I just stumbled upon a great idea maybe. The 2.7l taco motor. My big question is the bell housing the same????
I know at first it sounds like a dumb question. But it is a 4cyl tranny and I know the a340h is 6cyl so I'm hoping
        It's interchangeable.

I would love to stick with my auto. But I want duals and low gears so a 5 speed is probably where I'll end up with. Any help is appreciated. It rued to search but like I say there is not a lot of info on the auto

I have done this. There is tons of support for it if you know were to look.  I went from an 22re-A340F and swapped in a 2RZ. You need the RZ bell housing, you need a VZ torque converter. The A340H was behind 4cyl's also I've seen and driven one and know of people with them. The A340 is a great trans if you keep it cool it is found behind Supra's. Lexus V8's and Jeep 4.0's. The H model was a huge power robber because of the T-case design.
My build here covers this I believe, and I have posted tons of info on other A340 threads on here and other forums.

Build there http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/toyota-truck-4runner/996438-2rz-82-w-a340-duals-radesigns-way.html
This is from a swap document I'm putting together:
My experience: I swapped a 22RE A340F in my ‘82 truck. Then when I swapped to the 2RZ, I bought a RZ flex plate and bolts from eBay. I found the 22re TC that was on the installed A340F I had was a different bolt pattern and used different diameter bolts than the 2RZ unit, so I then found that the  RZ TC wouldn’t work on the 22RE A340F because of a different spline count. Next I tried a 3VZ TC, it had the right bolt pattern that matched the flex plate and also the spline count that matched the 22RE A340F. Good thing for my junk gathering addiction.
What I used was this: 22RE A340F& 3VZ TC &3RZ bell housing and flex plate, confusing yes but it all bolted up.
The Toyota bell housings have the engine series designations letter cast into the top of them i.e. R, VZ, RZ.

I recently purchased an A340F, had it re-built and installed along with an Inch Worm Lefty. All fits well with my 2.7 motor.

I am still having torque converter issues in that the shop says they received a bad shipment. The 1st one internally grenade and the 2nd was way off on the stall. The 3rd, where I am now, does not seem to have the get up 'n' go as before the swap and my fuel mileage is way down.  I need to find and OEM converter, no after market stuff.
That said, definitely find the OEM converter while you are at it.

Hope this helps.
