half doors
« on: Mar 19, 2005, 09:12:04 PM »
hey guys i have an extra set of doors and im gonna be makin some half doors out of them pretty soon. i want to keep the door frame and i want to keep them pretty simple i have never built half doors before but i planned on just cutting them and getting some 16 gauge and TIG welding it in. but i also want cup holders and i dont know how i would do that. can i just use a hole saw and get some cup holder inserts somwhere? please post pics of your half doors and explain what materials and what tools you guys used to build them. any ideas will be appreciated

I cut mine with a sawzall, and then used 2x4 for the top screwing it in.  I used carpet padding and then a layer of fake leather.  Will get some pics tomarrow since i am not at home.

Check places like West MArine for the cup holder inserts.
Cross threaded is tighter than Locktite

or just get some pipe (thin wall) and plate one end, then weld it in.

I have since moved the outside part of the fake leather stuff inbetween the metal and the wood for a more cleaner look.

here's a pic of mine...

They're up in the attic for the winter, but will soon come out for spring!  The latch releases I made using old mountain bike parts...You can't see 'em in the picture, but they don't rattle at all and work great!
