85 Runner, 4x4, Leaf Spring Zerks
« on: Dec 12, 2013, 11:37:47 AM »
I found a total of 6 potential Zerk fitting for all my leaf springs.  Two for each Front Leaf and one for each Rear Leaf.

I used the same Moly2 Blend as I did for other grease locations.  FSM never specified or addressed greasing the leafs. Figured if a fitting was there, it should be greased I guess.

I have what I believe is a missing zerk on the Front Passenger Leaf behind the Axle.  And a broken one on the Passenger Rear Leaf.

I greased what I could.

Any input on the missing/broken zerks?  What am i in for?

Thanks

All zerks on springs are aftermarket, you didn't grease the OEM springs, as to what you are in for....  squeaky springs. The main purpose is to stop the typical neoprene squeak.

For the missing zerks look in the hole to see if part of the zerk is broke off in there, if its not then you can get some new drive type/press in fittings and knock it in with an appropriate size socket or small pipe. You might even be able to leave the broke end in there and just drive the new one in, I guess grease would still flow.

One of mine was broke off in the hole so used a small drill bit to get out as much as I could, probably would have been good to take the bolt out and reverse flush with some brake cleaner, but I didn't. The greasable bolt on mine used 3/16'" drive type fittings.

just unscrew and screw new zerk in, most zerks are self tapping  changed them all the time on the case 580

you may have to use an easy-out to remove the broken ones,I also have a set of reverse drill bits,so you start drilling the broken zerk out and if you are lucky the bit hangs up and starts removing the broken zerk, cloged ones I just use a vice grip to remove, missing ones just look in there and make sure there are no pieces in there and then install a new one
