Anyone swap in a 3rz without smog equpment?
« on: Sep 09, 2013, 03:10:38 PM »
I want to put a 3rz in my 84, And here in Ky we don't get smog checked. Has anyone done the swap and only used what is required to make it run well? Or....Might I be better off to use a stand alone type computer? I don't want to run anything I don't have to. Thanks.

It's not any more or less difficult to put a cat and O2 sensors in the exhaust.  Maybe a little more money if you do custom exhaust with a new cat.  The ECM needs O2 sensor input and it monitors the charcoal canister evap system and the EGR system.  This might could be defeated via resistors, but I'm not certain.  My EGR solenoid is bypassed via a resistor and it hasn't given me a CEL since the mod.  Evap system on the other hand.....

Agree, there is very little invovled to keep everything and probably an easier swap than trying to remove stuff. This is a simple swap and keeping the few emissions items is not difficult. I snagged the exhaust from the donor truck as well as the wiring. Plug and play mostly.

I don't mind putting it on the truck if it is easier. I just don't need it. I like to get rid of everything the truck doesn't need. If I can't find a way to delete it easy......It stays.

I have a 22re harness, would it be better to use or just adapt the 3rz harness to my 1984 carb harness?

Keep in mind that if systems are eliminated and the ECU finds out it will run in Limp mode (depending on what systems are missing) and you'll have an engine that will only be running 80- or 90-percent power until five years down the road you finally decide to do it right like you should have ... and then you forgot how to do all the wiring and now you're in a bigger mess stuck with a performance-limited engine that could be yielding better returns.

If possible, do it right the first :twocents:

I feel the same way, and I'm glad you asked, because I've been looking for info on this as well. I've been doing some searching, and I can say that running without the EVAP is possible and has been done before. I don't have details yet, aside from a really poorly drawn diagram, but with the info I do have I don't see any way that EVAP crap finds its way onto my rig.

I am gonna plan on just installing it as factory for now. If I can learn how to trick the computer Then I will.
I am sure there is a way but is the outcome worth the effort?
I have a while to save the dollars anyway so I can spend a lot of time researching this.
 Thanks for your input gents.

This swap is ultra easy with all the factory parts, I mean simple and easy. My guess is you would have more time and probably problems if you start messing with it. They are way simpler than the earlier Toyota R/RE's.

I am going to do it just as soon as I have the money to buy it all.

Any year that is preferred?
