Wobble
« on: Aug 06, 2013, 06:10:26 PM »
I just did a SAS. When I drive over about 15-20mph the front shells wobble back and forth bad. I just had the tires balanced and I checked to see if the brakes were rubbing. I rebuilt the knuckles and did the IFS hub body conversion. It seems to only do it when going straight and I did not have the front D line in. Hoping its something simple I'm overlooking. Has anybody had this problem?

Most likely needs toe out.  If you measure lug to lug on the front/back of the front two tires, the front of the tire measurment should be like 1/16 or so More than the rear.  Make sense?

What is your castor set at?

What did you set the pre-load at on the trunion bearings (knuckle bearings) at?

How long are the front shackles from bolt hole to bolt hole?

How much drop on the front hanger?

What size tires, height and width?

Are your u-bolts tight?

Are the spring bolts tight?

Are the spring center pins tight?

There are a lot of things that can cause "death wobble".

i didnt have a pull scale to set pre load. i just reused the same size shims that were there

im running 37x12.50r15 MTRs

i will recheck all bolts. i didnt think about the spring center pin.

i know a lot of things cause death wobble. but does it usually happen at only 15 mph. I'll add more info after i check everything tomorrow.
thanks for the replies

might be a good idea to get a fish scale (cheap ones work) and check your steering pre-load.

Like HCH said, get a pull scale, you can pick them up cheap at Wal-Mart in the fishing department. If you put new bearings and races in, you need to re-check the pull pounds.

start with the obvious.
Did you use a sas kit, if not you may have a caster issue.
break out the tape measure check rough alignment, and square of front axle to rear axle
put the back tires on the front, see if you got a poorly balanced tires,
tightness of shackles and bolts.
Toe out helps but to me it is tiring to drive that way cuz you are constantly correcting.

Well toe out solved my problem. Thanks for the advise. Hope it's not enought to cause my tires to wear weird.
