CHoke
« on: Mar 21, 2005, 04:01:06 PM »
I have a 80 truck with a 20r/22r hybrid.  When I start it, it revs to about 3500rpms the when it gets warm it goes down to about 2100rpms.  I tried adjusting the idle screw and id doesnt do anything, my guess is that either the choke is stuck open or is not adjusted.  THis isnt the electric choke but from what the book says it is controlled by water.  Does anybody know if you can unhook the choke, and how hard is it to replace the choke.  what parts are needed to replace the hole thing, when I look up choke on autozone.com it comes up with a list of parts and I dont want to buy anything that I dont need.

sepate from the hot idle screw.

the choke may very well be stuck on, butt it's the cold fast idle screw that is making it run so fast.
worth a look any way. :dunno:

ok, take 2. some carbs use a fast idle cam for the cold fast idle. they run the cam off of the idle screw and just get in the way so as to bump up the cold idle when the choke is on. if yours is that way you'll have to remove the cam and link. take a look and see what you think ya got.

Dude, you should be able to tell at a glance if the choke is sticking or not.  Just look down the throat of the carb when the truck has warmed up to see if the plate is opened up or not.  There should be 3 or so screws holding the choke body in place, if it's not opening loosen those slightly(after it's fully warmed up) and slowly rotate the choke housing either way and see if it moves.  I can't remember which way cause I haven't had a stock carb for so long, but it'll move no matter which way you rotate it.  I personally like the water choke on my weber.  If it's not that and not either idle adjustment then I would suspect a vaccuum leak.
