Can you mate a G-52 or a G-54 tranny to a 20R without a bellhousing adapter? and how do you tell the difference between the two transmissions?

Anything that came behind a 22r or 22re will fit.  You will have a longer trans tansfer case combo though so your driveshafts will be the wrong length.

What do you think is a fair price to pay for a G-52 in good shape with the whole clutch assembly?
