Third Member applications
« on: Jan 27, 2013, 04:54:43 PM »
I have a 94 pickup with a 22re and 4.10 gears. I found a 91 automatic 4runner at a scrapyard that they claim has 4.56 gears, first off do those runners come with 4.56's normally in those years, and secondly would I be able to simply swap those third members into my axles without doing anything special?
...also, being unfamiliar with it, what should they be worth?

Yeah they either have 4.56 or 4.88s, they'll go into your axle with no problems. If I were selling them I'd sell the rear for $70-100 and I wouldn't bother with the front. But buying them from a junkyard I wouldn't go over $50, they cost $40 at my local pull n save.

Awesome thank u! What are the signs of wear, failure, etc. that I should watch for, anything in particular that is a typical failure or weakness?

Well chances are that the axle has never been opened up so I'd just check all the bearing for play and make sure there's no chips on the r&p teeth.

I feel honored LOL, but alright cool thanks a lot for the feedback! Any special tricks or things I'll need to look out for when swapping the third members into my truck? or is it as simple as bolting them in?
(not to be a pain with a thousand questions I just don't know what to expect having never done it before)

First off you need to figure out if they are 4:56 or 4:88. If they the fatory 4:88 I would leave them there. While there is someway or another to install a loker in them, the R&P are unique to that diff. There are no aftermarket R&P's to support them, the only place you can get R&P's is from the dealer and they are very expensive. This is my opinion.

It's as simple as bolting them in and going. Like OOPS said, definitely check the ratio. If it's 4.88 they're very unique, still worth grabbing. You could at least sell them for a nice profit.

They make a specific detroit locker for the 4.88 diff.

New to me, when I got a hold of one (11 years ago) there was nothing out there.

I still would rather stick to a diff with more options due to my tight (college student) budget haha but thanks for clearing that up
