wheel play at 3 and 9?
« on: Dec 28, 2012, 09:47:03 AM »
Got a 90 runner with SAS.  Swap was done about three years ago.  Its my wifes truck so it only been wheeled on rocks once.  It mostly sees snow and pavement.  Ive checked tie rods, just did wheel bearings and new rotors.  There is about 1" play at 3 and 9 (side to side) none at 12 and 6.  When moving tire back and forth, the other side moves as well at the knuckle.    No play in tie rods!  This has been there for a little while now.  No real tire wear.  Can hear rattle noise comming from front at slow speeds none at freeway.  Sometimes a clunk when turning after its been raining.  Wondering if this could be trunnions?  Or possibly a worn steering gear.  Truck has 300,000 miles on it so steering gear is old.  Dont notice any other problems with steering.  Thinking about doing knuckles since the kit used for the swap was from a company whose name rimes with Grail Tear.  Dont want to do it if not neccessary since fund are tight right now.
Any feedback or knowledge of this issue.  Is this amount of play normal for a SAS?

With the wheels on the ground, have someone rapidly move the steering wheel back and forth, as you look underneath.
I just found out that my steering box is flexing on the frame (91 truck SAS w/35s).
Going to have to reinforce that area a bit.

Checked that, definately not the mount.  Its just that both knuckles move side to side about an inch.

Got me there.  I would think that with bad knuckle bearings, the knuckle would move at 12 and 6 as well.

The only other thing I could dig up was adjusting free play on the box.

yeah, tightened the free play once,  but didnt want to go too much.  Ive heard you can really mess up the gear if you tighten too far.  Ive been thinkin about tweaking it a little more to see if it helps.  The more Ive read about trunnions the play seems to be at 12 and 6 like you said.

Adjusted the free play in the steering gear a little bit more and this did not help.
