Duel case confusion
« on: Mar 10, 2004, 08:09:18 PM »
  84 4Runner 4 cyl. carbureted.

I'm in the parts gathering stage of a duel case conversion. I bought the adapter from Chris at Marlin's. Now I need to know what else to get.

I thought I could leave the original case (forward shift)  reduction unit on the trans and get another (85-88 EFI) case to be added on. The A.A. catolog states that the 84-88 carbed t-case cant be used as a "crawler box". Yet on another website someone says that any t-case can be used. I really dont care who's right or wrong. I just want to do this conversion w/ the minimun of screaming, wrench flinging fits of frustration.

When I ordered the adapter, Chris tried to tell me what needed to be done, but my head started to spin and I  could hear the phones ringing off the hook. I said goodbye and let him get on w/ his business.

I'm paying attention now. Please clear the confusion for me.

Great question!
You must use your orginal 84 forward shifting t-case for the Marlin box.
You will need a complete top shift t-case for the rear box.
Any t-case will work, but if it is not a top shifter, then it would have to be converted before it would bolt to the back of the Marlin adapter plate.

I have an 85 truck with a single 4.7 (fwd shift) transfer case.  Can I do the topshift conversion and then bolt a crawl box in front?  I know that the 4.7 gears need to be in the rear case to minimize the torque in the rear case.  Is the install as simple as it looks?  I have bucket seats and it look like I just need to punch a hole for the additional shifter, install Marlin's x-member and have the driveshafts modified.  I have the stock center bearing that I would be bypassing, do I need to do anything special with the rear driveshaft or differential?

Yeah that's the same thing I did, 4.7 forward shift converted to top and 2.28 top shift converted to forward :turtle:
