Topic: Intermittant hard starts - 88 4runner 22RE

So I've replaced the battery, battery cables, and checked my alt. to make sure it was charging and it is. Most of the time it starts just fine. But some days I just have to keep trying until it fires? The starter thats in my Runner is a Bosch(In it when I bought it). Ive read something once that said Toyotas don't like Bosch parts(not sure about this). Thought whatever I read said something about Bosch being German and Denso being Japanese and American.

My questions are:
Could it be the starter relay? Was thinking the relay either works or it doesn't.
Should I start checking my ignition switch?
Should I just replace the starter with a Denso?
Has anyone rebuilt a Bosch starter? links to where I can get a rebuild kit...

Is the starter moving or does it just click? If it just clicks take it out and find a alt/starter rebuilding place and buy the little brass contacts for it, they go bad and will cause issues. If its cranking over try the cap and rotor as stupid as it sounds right now in winter time if they get wet they start to corrode and will not give off a good spark.

Define hard starting, like above post does it click once, many clicks, does it just crank over? Have you checked for fuel, air and spark

When it wont start it just clicks. So it mosty likely is the stater contacts then? The cap, rotor, plugs and wires were replaced last fall but I'll double check to make sure.

junya92 - Yes it just clicks. I just keep cranking until it finally fires up.

Replace the contacts

It's easy, lube everything while you at it......

Clean up the contact on the solenoid by putting it in a drill press and using a file.

can also be the ignition!!!!
test the voltage @ the remote wire on the starter
