Exhaust manifold temperature
« on: Jul 31, 2002, 05:49:39 AM »
Hello all, This is THE place on the web for Toyota 4x4 everything, thanks!

Does anyone know how hot a stock exhaust manifold should run?  I have an '86 Custom Cab, all stock (22RE).  I had to replace the head gasket and once I got it running the exhaust manifold would glow bright orange.  Took to a shop and found out ($$$) that the mass airflow had been adjusted at well as the Throttle position sensor.  Mechanic adjusted it back as best he could and it runs great, but I think it is till running hot.  He shot it at 600 to 900 degrees :~~:!!!  Anyone know?

Would anyone be willing to check there exhaust temp while hot and let me know what it is?  I think I have an overheating problem (and a broken temp guage) and am trying to troubleshoot it.  Any help would be appreciated!

My exhaust header (4-1) on my Supercharged MR2 runs around 1400 degrees F.

I am not sure about stock manifolds...

I have not seen my headers glow red hot however.. But then again I have not jumped out of the car at night really quick after a quick run :~~:

FYI, if your EGR valve is plugged shut, your cylinder temps will be higher, if your timming is advanced to much causing predetonation, your temps will be higher, etc. Heck, even a plugged air filter will up your exhaust temps-

That stuff is all good (or new) and it would glow red for a good 5 minutes after shutting it down and stay red while running.  Thanks for the info, still would like to see what a 22RE runs at.  Other note, I think my temp guage (stock) is broken, when the head gasket blew I had the thing boiling, but the guage only read half way!?!  I got a new sending unit from Toyota and plugged it into what I thought was the right place (on top of the mnifold, near the head by cylinder 1&2).  Is this right?  If not where does it go and what did i screw up?  What is a normal water temp for the 22RE?

glowing headers = timing problem.  BTDT on my 350...when we first started it, my hugger headers got cherry red....even at idle.  Once we got it timed properly, no problems.

the water temp sender is between the 2and 3 cly. its not part of the intake manifold.

my hole manifold and turbo glows cherry red after i run it hard.  but it shouldn't do that to a 22re unless the timing is off or the cat is plugged????

New cat and muffler, timing is dead on.  Just seems to run hot.  Thanks for the info on the temp sending unit.  What i replaced was on the intake between 2 and 3 (i think) in the water path.  But not where you say it is, probably why the problem still exists.  Any easy way to reach it without a blow torch?  Does anyone know what normal water temp is for the 22RE?  That  would be real helpful.  Thanks again all!

That doesn't sound right.  Your timing is dead on, but the ex manifold burns cherry red. Are you detonating at all?  You might be running to lean, and you might want to pull the manifold off and clean out the passages they could have a tremendous carbon buildup slowing down the exhaust passage.  What size exhaust diameter do you have, is it stock? A friend of mine  purchased a 87 efi truck and some fool put on a 1 inch diam. exhaust system (must have got it from a lawn mower)  almost blew the motor up past  2500 r.p.m.
