Help Me decide????
« on: Jan 19, 2005, 08:31:51 PM »
This guy wants to sell me his 85 4runner for 4500. Please post

Hey guys I found a 85 4runner for sale that has a 94 22re with 75k on it, while body has 190k. The suspension is chevy springs with marlin and all pro's suspension components. Marlin crossover steering. 35''wranglers. Good interior. No rust. 5.29 gears and lock right lockers. Good paint.Compression checked and it was 167 across the board for all 4.

The only thing it needs is a new clutch and a timing gear set. The clutch and timing gear set is going to be $1050 to do at a shop.

I was wondering if you think it sounds like a good deal??????????????????????? :headscratch:

I'd give him 2,600 and fix that sh$* myself. the clutch is super easy and the timing chain isn't bad of you don't pull the head, though  it may have some electrolisis as I found my 40k rebuild had and it was leaking into my #3 cylinder. I'd look at the work and make sure I didn't have to fix anything that was done buy the owner like wiring, or the welding of suspension stuff  :twocents:
Sounds like more tree huggin hippie bull :pokinit:

If you are seriously thinking about having a shop do the work to that runner if you get it I say stay away and go buy a honda.

If you can get him down in the price to around $3500, it wouldn't be a bad deal.  Asking $4500, he should have already replaced the timing chain and clutch.

For a grand Ill drive my ass down there and replace that crap in an afternoon in your driveway.

The timing shain isnt easy to screw up at all.  Only the truely dumb that have the attention span of crack fiends could possibly get it totally wrong.  There is no need to fear the face of the unknown.

I was told that you can change the timing on a 22re with out even moving the engine is this correct. I talked him down to 4000 and maybe 3500 but thats not final yet

I think i might get it for 3800. It runs okay except the timing part. But for what it has in susp and work done its worth it I think

If the timing chain and clutch were replaced, without the mods, its probaby worth 2k. The cost of the upgrades that he's done (assuming they're done well) is roughly $2500. Generally, you're lucky if you can recover 50% of the cost of upgrades, so that makes the truck (in current condition) worth approx $2300 (2000+ 1300(value of upgrades) - 1000(cost of replacing timing chain and clutch)).

I'd look for another truck.
