my 83 loses power going up hills
« on: Dec 04, 2010, 06:45:38 PM »
Why does my 83yota lose power going up hills only thing i did was go from 235/75 tires to 31x10.5 would that make such a big difference?

It could be a timing issue. When was the last time you checked your Spark Plugs? Do you here a knock coming from the timing chain area? It might be off a tooth or two.

I lost some power when I got new tires 35,12.50,15 Mickey Thompson rare tires
Any way lost power , that ping noise that he's talking about could also be distrib timing
When chains stretch they get out of wack , mess w the distrib then drive then again , timing light might help, but that ping noise should go away , when you adjust it ,,,

But.     I bought a 32 36 weber from a junk yard and messed w my timing and I still drop back to third gear , sometimes second gear , but your power will Scream
79 cyote will help you if you end up getting a weber

Long story short. We ber has 2 bigger barrels and the air fuel choke idel are soooooo easy to set up  this should get your power back !! Good luck hope this helps.

Chances are it's your timing chain, your guides are shot. You have two choices, 1) replace the timing kit (chain, sprocket, tensioner, and guides)......2) advance your distributor to make up for the loss of power untill you can get around to doing it. Had the same problem w/ my 93.

OPEN THE VALVE COVER AND LOOK DOWN TO WHERE YOUR CHAIN IS, YOU CAN TELL IF ONE OF GUIDES GONE OR NOT.

clean the carb out too i cleaned mine up and turned the timing up and got a lot more power out of it and i run 35 bias baja claws with steel rims that are heavy. rotating energy has a lot to do with power its about for every 15 lbs is one hp when i run my street tires that are about half the weight of the claws i have a ton of power

Wow, my buddy had a 81 on 36 toyo's (5.29 gears) and he hauled ass on the inclimb up to shaver lake at 60mph. He was right next to me and Im efi! How's your clutch? Is it still grabbing like it should or do you feel any slipping?

Stock timing is 8* btdc This sucks to say it plainly. Ive run around w/ 25* timing advance, i wouldnt run it for a long trip but around town wont hurt it and i had Gobbs of Power. But just to play it safe i leave it at 15* btdc and my yota has much more power than w/ stock timing. So i say advance ur timing about 7* and check back  :twocents:

A 22r is a fickle beast when it comes to power, any slight changes can make a big difference in precieved power. When I went from 31's to 33's I noticed a big difference in my 80 but my 86 felt and drove no different when I went from 33's to 35's. Plus I did do the conversion from a 20r/4speed to a 22r/5 speed and it was a 20r/22r hybrid on the 80.

I have the same problem my timing chain is stretched out. I am going to replace it with the LC Engineering adjustable timing chain kit. I just put a new carb on mine and have the timing adjusted as far as i can only at 10 btdc and adjusted my carb to get what I can.

Its amazing how robust a 22r is. I currently have an intake leak, carb gasket leak, egr leak, bad egr diaphragm, bad AAP vaccum, and a carburetor thats running on only primaries and is basically broken. And she still can wheel like hell and get me to and from the trail, runnin just fine

I have the same issue with my 84. I'm running 33"s with stock gearing. My next steps are to re-gear and slap the webber 32 on it. Good luck man.

on the street its really all about axle gears, 4.10s are :pokinit:  4.56s are okay. 4.88s are good all around, just enough on the highway and good on the trail, and 5.29s are awsome if you like snapping pinions . i say 4.88s, they wont break on the trail and theyre good enough gearing for the street. they Will pull hills w/ 37x14.50 toyos, this was back wen my carb and engine were fudged up and all i had was exhaust
