3RD speedo gear worn out?
« on: Jan 20, 2011, 03:48:43 AM »
On my 86 Toyota 4x4 2.4..a fellow changed the speedo gear for the 3rd time and this one lasted a week. Now the speedometer works/dosen't work.Used the OEM part #...same cable as it seems good, tested it with a drill and the speedometer turned easily.A fellow on another forum had a similar problem and this was his reply.Thoughts on this or other solutions please.http://www.yotatech.com/f116/3rd-speedo-gear-failure-227970/ the worn plastic gear is the only similar symptom.

How many teeth on the gear?

If it's 17,  the overall diameter is slightly too small.

Stock size is 18

I bought a used T-case that had a damaged (plastic) speedo drive gear. I found a chewed up steel drive gear inside when I was rebuilding it with 4.7 gears. I don't know what caused the damage but, I had to replace it or keep eating plastic gears.

Unscrew the speedo cable from the T-case, remove the single retainer bolt and pull the speedo gear assy out. Then use a pen light and look inside to see what the steel gear looks like. It's probably damaged and needs to be replaced.

That is basically what happened to me. But mine was both the speed-o gear and the oil gear. The needle bearing on the input/output shaft was really worn and the output had a lot off wobble. The extension housing was almost worn through.

An older fellow at the local coffee shop said he uses a GPS for a speedo on his old dodge truck as the speedo dosen't work, just plugs it into the cig lighter.Any one use this/know of a reasonably priced unit.Any comments. The fellow who sometimes works on my truck won't be able to check it out for a week or two and if it's too involved or expensive to replace I might go the GPS route if feasible.

Still haven't solved this  problem.Getting noise from the speedometer cluster, that goes away with clutch pushed in..is this the input shaft bearing?

noise from the cluster that goes away when you push the clutch in thats not right theyr in completly different places... are you sure that when the cluster is being installed the cable is getting completly snapped into the back of the speedo i kno this will caust the speedo needle to not stay at a steady speed and work one minute then not the next and look like its shaking when it is working
