IFS hub not unlocking
« on: Dec 13, 2010, 02:02:35 AM »
After a day of wheeling my cv boot on my 86 pickup ripped open. Would the torn cv boot be the reason why the hub won't unlock? i can switch it to "free" and "locked" but the half shaft still continues to spin with the tire no matter what.

you might have some how stripped the gear in it but that would be really hard. Maybe you just put enough pressure on it to cause it to bind up. Try taking it off and see what you see in there might just need to be taken off and re seated.

There is a ring inside the hub with ears on it, if the ears are bent that is your problem. The torn boot should not affect the locking mechanism.

The hub gear probably came off the spring, probably from bent ears.  I just put one back together Saturday.

I'm probably going to take it off and check, is there anything i should be worried about flying in to my eye when i pull it off?

Would water cause damage to it. because it was working fine till a week after a trip through some water crossings.

If it is broken, is there anyone or place that could rebuild it for cheap?

Its an IFS one so i'm not sure if there is anything diffrent about the SA version.

not much to break in em, esp on a stock rig. Usually they justy get gummed up, or the spring kicks sideways and they get stuck, kinda weird at first how they go together, but not too hard, really easy after you done it a couple times.

Alright, when my schooling ends this week i'll take it appart and post some picks...maybe yall can point out anything wrong with it or something. Are there any rebuild kits, might as well get one since i'm taking it apart?

Here is an exploded view of an Aisin Hub (Isuzu) notice that there is a small spring and ball, be careful not to loose them sucks crawling around trying to find them.

Ok i took it apart and from the diagrams that rocksurf gave me, it seems i'm missing the tensioner spring for the "follower paw" and the seal was torn in two.

Found mud water and grease all mixed in probably prevented the clutch from moving. Would that missing tension spring be the reason for why its not unlocking?

Junkyard will have one. You could get one off a Isuzu, sammi, yota ifs or solid, and maybe a older mitzu truck or dodge anything with a aisin hub will have that same detent spring and ball.

tension spring behind the follower paw.. not the spring in the dial itself.
