i joined the forum about 2 months ago when i was trying to buy a 85 4 runner, the deal fell through but i am still interested in getting a yota. my question is would it be possible to put a 5vz-fe in one of the old style (79-83) trucks. i started working at a toyota dealership in albuquerque nm in september and have dealt with both the 3vz(which IMO is a pos) and the 5vz and would like a old style truck as a daily driver with more power than the 22r and remaining with a toyota powertrain.

    It is very possible. In fact their are a few members that have either done the 5vz or the 3rz swaps already. BigMike and I have done the 3rz. The easest thing todo would be to purchase a salvaged Taco without front end damage and then just start moving things over.

i figured the easyest way to do it would be using a wrecked truck because new engines arnt cheap from toyota. depending on when i can get a truck and start the project i may even look at the new 4.0 yota v6 with the 6 speed that is in the new tacoma depending on what problems the engine has. what i like about the 5vz is it is realitivly easy to work on and so far the only problem i have seen is the water pump.

I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. At least I hope it is.   I'll find out for sure when I attempt to swap a 5VZ into my 82. Just need to find me a wrecked Tacoma first.

i heard about this swap in to a early model 4runner but as i recall the guy said it needed a cowl induction hood to clear the intake. i dont know if there is ant truth to this but it seemed that the 79-83 trucks had less room under the hood than the 84-88 trucks.

Good for you!  I work at Karl Malone as a technician....Do you know Orlando?  He's our T-10 student right now...

A few of us at KMT have 'yota rockcrawlers...

As for the engine swap, anything is possible given the right parts and the right tools.  I've done a few, but never the 3.4 into an early style truck.  Depending on your lift/bodylift situation a 3.4 will probably fit pretty nicely, but it will definitely be spendy!

     I'm in the early stages of installing a 3.4L 5VZ-FE into a 1985 truck/frame The 1985 truck has fuel tank, lines, brakelines etc. running down the Passenger (left) side My doner truck was a 1998 Taco and everything is opposite. The exhaust is routed down the Passenger side and everything else is on the driver's side including the front propeller shaft. I believe that the best weight distribution should have the fuel tank on passenger side.   (or maybe I should put both tanks in?) In order to match the 3.4 to the 1985 frame configuration I grabed a 3.0L bell to put the Clutch slave back to the right side. I then discovered all 3.0 R150 trannies, as well as having the throwout lever on the right side, have a shorter inputshaft, bellhousing and a larger OD inputshaft bearing. If the ID of these two different bearings is the same I could take my 95.5+ bearing and put it on a Pre 95.5 input shaft. Problem solved!    Any help here would be muchly appreciated
