Fuel pump prime loss??
« on: Dec 04, 2011, 09:43:04 PM »
I have a carbed 22r in my 87 PU. Over the last few weeks the fuel pump seems to lose its prime or something. If it sits more than a day its is a bear to get started. I could sit there all day and crank till the battery dies. If I pump the throttle it wont run but if I leave the throttle closed it will catch and run rough until I try to give it some gas and then it just dies. If I blow the fuel line out with air and dump a little fuel in to the top of the carb it will fire right up and run fine till it sits about a day.The filter and pump are brand new and the carb has a recent rebuild. Motor is also a new rebuild. Less than 5k

Winter fuel evaporates easier, and the fuel in the carb may have evaporated out.

Have that problem with my 64 Valiant (even if it's not winter)

I added an electric fuel pump to prime the system.

The carb may be draining into the engine, make sure to check this since the fuel can get past the rings and into the oil.

Alright, if this is the case, how do you fix it? I seem to have the same problem as the OP. Generally on a cold morning, I'll pump my carb 6-8 times and it'll fire off and run fine. I don't seem to be having fuel get past the rings into the oil though.
