fj40 rebuilt
« on: Jul 14, 2010, 07:59:45 AM »
Hi every one my name is paul, i am new to the offroad and suspension area i hope to learn from everyone and if i'm asking question that seem abc to you guys then please forgive thks. Any way i have an 1967 fj40 I brought about many 2yrs and never do any thing to it yet so now that i got laid off and have some free time and start tear it up before i'm back to work and don't have time to work on it. The fj40 is has some rust mostly on the back toward the bottom panel and both side panel and a 3 speed column mount shifter, all drum brake all around, the engine top end was apart, no carb, my built is to put a v6 tacoma or v8 tundra motors in it and ps of course and all wheel disc. brake. I just purchase an 1990 mini extra cab toyota truck for 800$ and it has v6 with automatic, i'm thinking swap the motor and the automatic into the fj40 what do you think? the fj40 has and old transfer case in it but i have not find out yet what is the number of that transfer yet, can the v6 with automatic mate to the transfer case ? and if I need to goes all wheel disc brake can I keep the old axle and buy a conversion kit or just swap it for a older 4x4 toyota truck? I have read alot on diffrent offroad website but still confuse, I want to keep mostly toyota stuff, if anyone have any commend or suggestion feel free to give me some advice for my project thks in advance.

do a mini truck from 79-85 conversion....cheapest way out and find lots of parts all over this network...wink wink...........perfect for off road in cali.......the v-6 you have has a gasket problem that many must alwayse follow when u use alot of tork....3400 tacomas iss the way if u have the means....

Not sure what you're planning on building your rig to do, but I'll tell you that the inline 6 that is in there is one of the best motors you can get. It is extremely reliable, easy to work on and gives you more torque than just about any other motor than a diesel. I had the same motor in my 72 FJ, and loved it. Lot's of people do small block chevy conversions, but not sure about the Tacoma motor. I'd stay away from the 3.0 you got in the other truck, and the head gaskets suck. Besides, the amount of gains for the amount of work involved, I think you'd be disappointed.

I bet you can rebuild the inline 6 and do the disk brake conversion for less than you'd spend doing the v6 conversion.

Just my opinion.
