MC dual case ???
« on: Aug 25, 2010, 10:14:02 AM »
i just got another 4runner that has MC dual case front case is a 21-spline 2.28:1 and the adapter is Cast Aluminum and is 10-degree and the the rear case is a 21-spline 4.70:1... my question is when i was messing around with it to make sure everything worked right the rear case was stuck in 4 low and it was like the shifter was in a bind and wouldnt budge an inch... so i took the shifter out and was able move the rails easy with a screw drive then put the shifter back in and its fine. on my other runner i have it set up with a twin stick so was thinking mabey the ball on the bottom of the shifter came out of the rail guide or some thing

any one else had this happen

This happened on my '82.  The problem was that the detent system that keeps the rails from just moving around had gone bad on the 2wd/4wd side.  Using the stock shifter (J pattern) I experienced no problems while riding around in 4Lo, because of the interlock that kept the 2wd/4wd rail from moving while the H-N-L shifter was in Lo.  However, when I rode around in 4Hi, the 2wd/4wd rail would slip into 2wd, so now my shifter is sitting in the 4Hi position on the H-N-L rail and the 2wd/4wd rail has moved to 2wd, so the shifter was stuck in 4Hi and the tcase was actually in 2Hi.  It took me pulling the shifter and driving around a field actuating the shift rails with a screwdriver to figure this out.  I temporarily solved it by not using 4Hi at all.  I eventually put a twin stick in to solve it until I put my MC07 in.

Mine does the same thing.  been doing it for at least 3 years now.  not sure why.  i have a new detent spring too.  i just make sure i have a screw driver handy.  i have a body lift so twin sticks won't work right for me.  it happens very randomly.

If you find out a fix, please let me know.  it would be great not to have to pull the shifter in the middle of the trail when you least expect it.
