86 motor to a 81 chassis
« on: Mar 08, 2010, 09:22:15 AM »
i have a 86 pickup with a good motor, trans., transfer., and rear axle, the body is junk. i picked up a nice 81 pickup with a blown motor. problem is, some one had just cut the wires to the motor off at the right fender of the 81. i believe there are 6 or 7 wires, color coded, but the don't all match the colors of the 86 motor. i do have the intake for the 81 if i need to swap it. ant help would be greatly appreciated.  :hammerhead:

if your going to keep the carb the 81 intake will bolt up to the 86 engine. I have a 85 celica engine in my 83.

:usa:Just completed one in a friends truck..88 efi in an 85 carbed truck...used the 88 cluster and the entire 88 dash/ engine harness, swapped tanks(fuel pump)... The ca. smog rep stated that it was a perfect swap/ passed the visual and ca smog w/ flying colors! dont short cut by chompin up the harness to save time and be sure that the o2 sensors are all in the "original" 88, in our case,location..the referee stated that this is where a lot of ( otherwise good swaps go bad)..take your time, do it right, do it once...the swap was easy, the wiring can be a bleep..Have a FSM handy, haynes and Chlymer, and Chilton manuals are somewhat vague in this area :twocents: :crossed: Good luck! :beerchug:
