I like the 3vzfe in my 89. If you get one, make sure that it is model year 1992 and up so that you can get the headgasket recall done for free! Better yet, buy one that has already had this done.
Yeah, the 3.0 is not as powerful as the 3.4, 4.0, 4.3 ....., but it has proven to be reliable (besides headgasket) and has more torque than the 22r. I can stay in 5th gear on hills with 35" tires.
Just my .02, Good luck.

I got the 3.0 most ppl rag on it but in the end its a pretty good lil heart but if your going to spend your money on a swap go 3.4....oh and Fred....if you get a 3.0 with a blown HG they wont replace it because its too old they stoped changing them on 99 i think.

Also stay away from the 3.0 with an auto. The auto is a big power robber, and the 3.0 can't afford anymore robbed power.

Straight from an e-mail from toyota motor corp. on 11/24/04:
The SPA program was a warranty extension that would cover the headgasket for eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever came first.
So it seems 3vzfe's aren't even covered anymore!

Hey Swampy,
2004-8 = 1996,
2005-8=1997,
Either way, it is not 1999. You've been listening to too much Prince.
Just yanking your chain, you are right that they pretty much aren't covered.

Yeah, but most of them would have had them done by now anyway. I like my 3.0 Granted, it needs some power, but hey, less speeding tickets for me
I mean, I dropped down from a 360v8 to a 3.0 and i dont mind it too much. ALl my runs up the hill to tahoe and reno have never caused any problems. v And talk about low maintenance. On my dodge I was fixing stuff constantly, with the 3.0, hardly have to do anything, just keep the fluids full. And best part is, no leaks
Overall, I think the 3.0s are a good engine, they may be lacking in the power department, but for the relaiblility that i have experienced, im glad i got one
