sputtering 22re
« on: Apr 02, 2010, 07:01:48 PM »
I did a search and couldn't find anything. Recently while driving on the highway and holding speed, the engine gets bogged down as if it had a dirty carburetor. It will cut in and out of power, but nothing that causes me to lose speed or compensate to. On the way to work this morning I noticed it got worse and that I actually had to floor it and downshift to keep speed at times. Starting off in 1st and then second it sputters and the power cuts in and out. The fuel filter has been changed. Spark plugs are new. I cleaned the throttle body. I can't figure out what the cause might be, help is appreciated, thanks.

give all your hoses a good check for cracks/ leaks, or maybe the idle air controll valve.

really don't think it is the fuel pump, just got off duty so I was messing around with it this morning. It seems like it isn't firing on all cylinders, and then it will. We checked the cap and distributor, changed the wires and coil. But I can put it in third, floor it and it won't accelerate. It idles and revs fine. Ilve cleaned the throttle body. Checked wires and vacuum lines. The next step is to try and clean the fuel rail/injectors. That'll have to wait til after church, Happy Easter

Just for laughs and giggles, put a pressure guage on the fuel rail to "confirm" the fuel pressure. That way you'll know fer sher that it's not the fuel pump. Cuz it sure sounds like low fuel pressure. The injectors wont open if the minimum fuel pressure isn't there. It WILL run like it's misfireing.  :twocents: . I'm heading over to

Pick up a repair manual from autozone, checkers etc.... It'll help you alot. Or just do a search on the web. As for the guage, I would look at those places too

kind of been short on cash, so I have had to skip the buying a manual part. Any chances of it being the fuel pressure regulator. At times the truck is hard to start and it would crank over about 8 times before I have to give it gas so it can start

pull the vacuum off the egr and plug it and see if that fixes your problem.  its the main line that comes into the bottom of the diaphram.

found it! got around to taking the intake off and cleaning it, 20 something years of filth, it was due. Anyways went to disconnecting the spark wires to see if it makes a difference in idle. Found that cylinder three was bad. Looked at the fuel injector connector and the prongs inside of the clip backed out of the hole. A little bit of super glue and some electrical tape fixed that.
