Is this possible?
« on: Mar 12, 2010, 07:07:26 PM »
Well I was just thinking about all the stuff that needs done for my SAS. :headscratch: Trying to see if there is anything that could be done before I start cutting to make the day a little easier. Little stuff like putting the shackle frame tubes on, getting the new longer brake lines on or should I just wait. Any other suggestions would be great. Thanks Steve

do you alread have your ifs torched? if not my suggestion would be to keep it as intact  as possible instead of disassembling the ifs. Save some time there for sure. Measure twice cut/weld once. Take your time squaring stuff up, makes alingnment much better in the end. Get good welds, dont want to be doubting the welds on the trail (good clean metal to weld on...lots of grinding!!)

Seems like you could weld on the front spring hanger, and put in the shackle tubes...  But you would have to be damn sure that they are exactly where they need to be, because you won't be able to mock-up very easily.  Although, I suppose maybe you could sling the springs underneath the IFS for mock-up purposes... if it clears...  I would say, go ahead and try it.

have your front axle all together with tires so you can just roll it on under the springs

I know I wont get it done in one day but i'd like to not take to long. I will see if the spring will fit for a mock up thats good idea. Axel is almost ready to go under minus the tires going to be useing the wheels that are on it now. Thanks guys for your input.

springs will not fit with the ifs already on
toy can weld in your shackle tubes
also before you start you can remove some ifs junk so its quiker later
skid plate, sway bar, front driveline, shocks

still driveable and when your ready to cut, less to remove

Go ahead and put the frame tubes in and get the front hanger tacked in place. That way once you are ready all you have to do in cut the IFS off and bolt up your springs and shackles to check your shackle angle. It's all downhill from there.

frame tubes are definantly doable. finish the solid axle. you could tack the spring hanger but be careful cuz you may have to move it. have the leafs bolted to the axle already. I finished my first sas in 2 days. started at 8am on a saturday and drove the truck home on sunday at 11pm. that was for front and rear 5 inch. and i slept somewhere in there. lol good luck!

X2 - The key statement here is "front hanger tacked".  Don't fully weld that hanger until you are happy with the front shackle angle.

Good luck!

well there are several things to double check before you start to avoid store runs while in the middle of it all. make sure your new shocks have the right bold diameter, you may beed a slip in spacer. have plenty of brake fluid and grease on hand for bleeding and lubing. plenty of grinding wheels, you'll need more than you think. and the biggest hammer you can find. you never know when it will come in handy. have fun.
